Metabolites of Lesser Grain Borer in Grains
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2004Many volatile alcohol and ester metabolites of the lesser grain borer (LGB, Rhyzopertha dominica) cultured on wheat grain were identified. Volatiles from infested samples at 80 degrees C were collected on Tenax absorbent, thermally desorbed, and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) using infrared (IR) and mass (MS) detectors for component identification.

Grain for processing should be clean and free of contaminants, but realistically, there may be many nongrain materials present. These materials cover a wide range: seeds of other crops and of weeds, insects and animal products, infected and defective grains, agricultural chemicals, and tainting substances.

3DXRD: Grain Maps, Grain Dynamics and Grain Refinements
Crystallography Reviews, 2004The three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD) method is reviewed. The method is based on the use of high-energy X-rays from synchrotron sources and a ‘tomographic’ approach to diffraction. With 3DXRD the structure of the embedded grains within polycrystals or powders can be characterised non-destructively within millimetre to centimetre size ...

Grain Structure and Grain Storage
1958Excerpts from the report Introduction: An understanding of the nature of cereal grains and their behavior during storage is a necessary basis for their proper handling on the farm or after they have left the farm. The 5 to 30 percent damage that occurs annually in stored grains not only results in a huge waste of food and feed but is a financial hazard

Whole grains, refined grains and fortified refined grains: What’s the difference?
Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2000Dietary guidance universally supports the importance of grains in the diet. The United States Department of Agriculture pyramid suggests that Americans consume from six to 11 servings of grains per day, with three of these servings being whole grain products. Whole grain contains the bran, germ and endosperm, while refined grain includes only endosperm.

Grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] is a relatively drought- and heat-resistant crop. World wide it is used as feed and food grain. In Australia, it is used as a feed grain and is grown under rain-fed conditions. Water availability to the plant is the major constraint to production.

Grains, grain boundaries and interfaces
2004The topic of grains and grain houndaries is extremely vast and covers many different concepts, involving not only the associated microstructural features, hut also the effects on material characteristics such as corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
