Today there are many food products on the supermarket shelves that make claims of whole grain or multiple grains content that is healthy. Many consumers are frequently confused about what is hype about the health benefits of the grains. This column attempts to bring clarity to this issue by separating the health facts from the hype.

3DXRD: Grain Maps, Grain Dynamics and Grain Refinements
Crystallography Reviews, 2004The three-dimensional X-ray diffraction (3DXRD) method is reviewed. The method is based on the use of high-energy X-rays from synchrotron sources and a ‘tomographic’ approach to diffraction. With 3DXRD the structure of the embedded grains within polycrystals or powders can be characterised non-destructively within millimetre to centimetre size ...

Metabolites of Lesser Grain Borer in Grains
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2004Many volatile alcohol and ester metabolites of the lesser grain borer (LGB, Rhyzopertha dominica) cultured on wheat grain were identified. Volatiles from infested samples at 80 degrees C were collected on Tenax absorbent, thermally desorbed, and analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) using infrared (IR) and mass (MS) detectors for component identification.

Coupling between grain growth and grain rotation
Applied Physics Letters, 2007Grain boundary motion during grain growth or recrystallization is considered as a diffusion process of atomic movement across the boundary. It can be accompanied by subgrain rotation or nanograin rotation. However, grain boundary migration can be achieved also by dislocation motion or creep.

Coagulation of grains and gas-grain interactions
Advances in Space Research, 1995Three-dimensional off-lattice Monte Carlo simulations have been used to simulate the production of interstellar dust analogues on the computer. At first, the two rather well known extreme cases of ballistic growth, i.e. particle-cluster (BPCA) and cluster-cluster aggregation (BCCA) were investigated.

Interstellar grain size spectrum and circumstellar grain-grain collisions
Astrophysics and Space Science, 1982In this paper, grain-grain collisions, which were recently suggested by Biermann and Harwit (1980) to occur in cool circumstellar envelopes and to be responsible for the interstellar grain size spectrum, are investigated. On the basis of the author's fragmentation theory, it is shown that in the result of such collisions size distributions of the typen(

Grain Flow for Rough Surfaces Considering Grain/Grain Collision Elasticity
Journal of Tribology, 2005Previous work by this group on an average lubrication equation for grain flow with roughness effects is extended to include grain-grain collision elasticity ranging from perfectly elastic to perfectly inelastic. The average lubrication equation is based on Haff’s grain flow theory, with flow factors from Patir and Cheng and Tripp’s use of perturbation.

The Elimination of Grains and Grain Boundaries in Grain Growth
Interface Science, 1997The topological changes that occur during coarsening of 2D and 3Dcellular structures, such as polycrystals, areinvestigated. Particular attention is given to the elimination ofgrain boundaries and grains with more than the minimum number oftopological elements.

Whole grains, refined grains and fortified refined grains: What’s the difference?
Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2000Dietary guidance universally supports the importance of grains in the diet. The United States Department of Agriculture pyramid suggests that Americans consume from six to 11 servings of grains per day, with three of these servings being whole grain products. Whole grain contains the bran, germ and endosperm, while refined grain includes only endosperm.
