In vitro activity of ciprofloxacin against aerobic gram-negative bacteria [PDF]

open access: greenAntimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, 1984
For 177 gram-negative isolates, the MICs for ciprofloxacin ranged from 0.02 microgram/ml (Escherichia coli) to 0.31 microgram/ml (Pseudomonas aeruginosa). In time-kill curves, ciprofloxacin at 8 X the MIC almost completely killed 10(6) CFU of P. aeruginosa by 24 h.

Effect of High Oxygen Tensions on the Growth of Selected, Aerobic, Gram-negative, Pathogenic Bacteria [PDF]

open access: bronzeJournal of Bacteriology, 1968
The in vitro effects of high O 2 tensions (P O 2 ) on aerobic, enteric pathogens were examined at pressures of up to 3 atm absolute. Organisms from the genera Salmonella, Shigella , and Vibrio were ...

Recovery of aerobic gram-negative bacteria from the Copan Eswab transport system after long-term storage [PDF]

open access: hybridDiagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease, 2020
We evaluated the Copan Eswab transport system for the quantitative recovery of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa after 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days of storage at room and refrigerator temperatures, and 7 and 30 days of storage at -80 °C and -20 °C using mono- and polymicrobial samples.

Detection of alternative nitrogenases in aerobic gram-negative nitrogen-fixing bacteria [PDF]

open access: greenJournal of Bacteriology, 1991
Strains of aerobic, microaerobic, nonsymbiotic, and symbiotic dinitrogen-fixing bacteria were screened for the presence of alternative nitrogenase (N2ase) genes by DNA hybridization between genomic DNA and DNA encoding structural genes for components 1 of three different enzymes.

Antibiotic resistance profiles of oral flora in hippopotami (Hippopotamus amphibius): implications for treatment of human bite wound infections [PDF]

open access: yesOne Health Outlook
Background The common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) is found in aquatic environments throughout sub-Saharan Africa and is known to cause attacks on humans living or working close to water bodies.

Multicenter Evaluation of the Bruker MALDI Biotyper CA System for the Identification of Clinical Aerobic Gram-Negative Bacterial Isolates. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The prompt and accurate identification of bacterial pathogens is fundamental to patient health and outcome. Recent advances in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) have revolutionized bacterial ...

Epidemiology of pharyngeal colonization of infants with aerobic gram-negative rod bacteria

open access: bronzeJournal of Clinical Microbiology, 1989
By using a selective medium, pharyngeal colonization with gram-negative rod (GNR) bacteria was determined in a cohort of 49 normal infants monitored from birth to 6 months of age. Culture swabs were diluted in 1 ml of saline for quantitation. The prevalence of GNR in the first 72 h of life was 8% and rose to 29% during the first month, 52% at 2.5 ...

Classical Microbiological Diagnostics of Bacteremia: Are the Negative Results Really Negative? What is the Laboratory Result Telling Us About the “Gold Standard”? [PDF]

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2020
Standard blood cultures require at least 24−120 h to be reported as preliminary positive. The objective of this study was to compare the reliability of Gram staining and fluorescent in-situ hybridization (FISH) for detecting bacteria in otherwise ...

Cultured Bacteria in the Abdominal Wall Incision During the Realisation of Caesarean Section in Cows: A Preliminary Study [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Although caesarean section (CS) is a common surgery, the bacteria contaminating the abdominal incision during this operation are not documented. This study aimed to enhance perioperative antibiotic therapy and reduce post-operative surgical site ...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Enteric Gram Negative Facultative Anaerobe Bacilli in Aerobic versus Anaerobic Conditions [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Antimicrobial treatments result in the host’s enteric bacteria being exposed to the antimicrobials. Pharmacodynamic models can describe how this exposure affects the enteric bacteria and their antimicrobial resistance.
