Detecting vorticity in cohesive deformable granular material [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2021
Numerical models of granular materials are useful in tribology, and can be used to predict wear and friction in contacts. DEM-like simulations are used to model particles of third-body, which are partly wear debris from rubbing bodies.

Memory Effects in Granular Materials [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2000
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of memory effects in vibration-induced compaction of granular materials. In particular, the response of the system to an abrupt change in shaking intensity is measured. At short times after the perturbation a granular analog of aging in glasses is observed.

Exploring chemo-mechanics of granular material using DEM [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2021
Particle Size Distribution (PSD) is one of the prime guiding factors of granular media response. Degradation via weathering is a process, which brings about a gradual shift in the PSD. In nature, chemically sensitive material like calcite undergoes chemo-

Estimation of Grain Size in Randomly Packed Granular Material Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

open access: yesChemosensors, 2022
Grain size is one of the most important physical parameters for randomly packed granular (RPG) materials. Its estimation, especially in situ, plays a key role in many natural and industrial processes.

Damping mechanisms of granular-material damper in structure with high natural frequency (Study of flow of vibration energy)

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2019
We investigated the damping mechanism of a granular-material damper for a structure with a high natural frequency. We focused on the flow of the granular-material vibration energy and considered its relationship with the damping characteristics.

Combined Effect of Compaction Methods and Loading Conditions on the Deformation Behaviour of Unbound Granular Material

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2020
Unbound granular material is an important construction material that is used for flexible pavement. As one of the most important indices used for describing the properties of unbound granular material, the deformation characteristic is significantly ...

On the Failure of the Granular Material

open access: yesSoils and Foundations, 1967
SYNOPSIS Notwithstanding the statistical theory of mechanics of granular material proposed by the senior author, was established basing on experimental evidences, still it contained several uncertain assumptions. By the bi-axial compression tests on assemblage of equal balls, almost all of assumptions were ascertained. Observing the failure phenomena,

Viscoelasticity of granular materials

open access: yesMechanics of Materials, 1995
Abstract In a former work (V.T. Granik and M. Ferrari (1993), Microstructural mechanics of granular media, Mech. Mater. 15, 301–322) a micromechanical theory for elastic granular media was deduced on the basis of the identification of the constituent grains with the nodes of a Bravais lattice.

Scaling properties of granular materials [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review E, 2001
Given an assembly of viscoelastic spheres with certain material properties, we raise the question how the macroscopic properties of the assembly will change if all lengths of the system, i.e. radii, container size etc., are scaled by a constant. The result leads to a method to scale down experiments to lab-size.

Damping mechanisms of vibration reduction system with granular materials for vibration system with high natural frequency (Proposal of “relative motion mass”, “rotating mass”, and their consideration)

open access: yesNihon Kikai Gakkai ronbunshu, 2017
We investigated the damping mechanism of a granular material damping system applied to reducing vibration in structures that have a high natural frequency and small vibration displacement. Experiments were conducted under several conditions of total mass
