Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Peak and Residual Shear Interface Measurement between Sand and Continuum Surfaces Using Ring Shear Apparatus

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study uses a ring shear apparatus to measure the interface shear stress between five types of sand and three surfaces: steel, PVC, and stone. Experiments were conducted under normal stresses of 25, 50, and 100 kPa at a constant shear rate of 0.5 mm ...

Self-Structuring of Granular material under Capillary Bulldozing

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
An experimental observation of the structuring of a granular suspension under the progress of a gas/liquid meniscus in a narrow tube is reported here. The granular material is moved and compactifies as a growing accumulation front.

Low‐Angle Grain Boundaries and Re‐Segregation in Single‐Crystalline Ni‐Base Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates that Re‐segregation at low‐angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) in Ni‐base superalloys is influenced by misorientation angle. Advanced microscopy and atom probe tomography reveal that higher misorientation angles increases Re‐segregation.

A thick wall concept for robust treatment of contacts in DEM simulation of highly polydisperse particulate systems

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemical Engineering
Modelling particulate systems with the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is an established practice, both in the representation and analysis of natural phenomena and in scale-up and optimization of industrial processes.

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Permeability behaviour of polyurethane polymer-reinforced granular material with and without clogging

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics
Polyurethane polymer-reinforced granular material (PPGM) can be used for ground improvement due to its high strength and drainage capacity. However, in engineering practice, clogging may occur that influence the permeability of PPGM.

Field Report from Collaborative Research Center 1625: Heterogeneous Research Data Management Using Ontology Representations

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A unified research data management framework for heterogeneous materials data is presented. The system integrates multimodal datasets using ontologies and knowledge graphs, enabling interoperability and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data principles. By linking data across scales and workflows, it supports reproducible, Artifitial
