Influence of Asphalt Emulsion Stabilization on Pavement Structural Behavior and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Assessing pavement sustainability requires jointly evaluating structural performance and environmental impacts, yet these dimensions are often analyzed separately. This study proposes an integrated framework combining mechanistic–empirical pavement design and life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the structural–environmental trade‐off associated with

Influence of Degree of Saturation (DOS) on Dynamic Behavior of Unbound Granular Materials

open access: yesGeosciences, 2021
The extensive application of natural unbound granular materials (UGMs) motivates studies into the mechanical properties of alternatives such as processed crushed rocks employed commonly as base or subbase layers.

Experimental Characterization and Numerical Performance Assessment of Treated Cinder Gravel for Base Course Applications

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
This study investigated the suitability of natural cinder gravel blended with fine‐crushed aggregates as a base course pavement material using laboratory tests and numerical simulations. Laboratory test results for natural cinder gravel indicated that cinder gravel alone failed to meet the Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) standard specifications for ...

Permeability of Granular Subbase Materials, MLR-90-4, 1991 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1991
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the materials Iowa uses as a granular subbase and to determine if it provides adequate drainage. Numerous laboratory and in-situ tests were conducted on the materials currently being used in Iowa.

Innovative use of stabilized pond ash as a sustainable material for flexible pavements: Experimental, microstructural, and numerical investigations

open access: yesNext Materials
This study investigates the use of pond ash stabilized with lime and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as an eco-friendly subbase material for the base and subbase layer of flexible pavements.

Three‐dimensional reconstruction of loose defects in semi‐rigid base layers using enhanced deep learning and point cloud from GPR images

open access: yesComputer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Volume 40, Issue 31, Page 6475-6492, 29 December 2025.
Abstract Loose defects in semi‐rigid base layers can critically compromise the structural performance and long‐term serviceability of asphalt pavements. However, accurate identification and quantitative assessment of such defects remain challenging due to the lack of reliable ground‐penetrating radar (GPR) data sets and the limitations of existing ...

Fracture and Damage Analysis of Cement‐Stabilized Fine and Coarse Grain Soils Under Static and Cyclic Loading Using Chevron‐Notched SCB Specimen

open access: yesFatigue &Fracture of Engineering Materials &Structures, Volume 48, Issue 6, Page 2708-2724, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Fracture toughness and cohesive fracturing properties of two classes of sandy‐clay soils, (A) with fine and (B) coarse grains and stabilized with low (2%) and high (10%) cement (as soil stabilizer), were investigated using a chevron‐notched semicircular bend (CN‐SCB) sample under static and cyclic loads.

An overview of the angular geomorphic lock – an anti-rutting model for sustainable road infrastructure

open access: yesJournal of Construction Project Management and Innovation
Sustainable road infrastructure is largely dependent on the resilience of the road foundation to withstand dynamic stresses. From Empirical to Mechanistic Empirical Pavement Design Guidelines (MEPDG), the use of unbound granular materials (UGMs) has ...

Stabilization of Highway Pavement Base Using Coal Ash, Experience of Georgia: Laboratory Characterization and Field Evaluation

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2025.
The study introduces slag ash from fuel combustion as a sustainable alternative to bitumen in road construction, improving dynamic deformation by 104%, static deformation modulus by 51%, and elastic modulus by 89%. This approach enhances road quality while reducing environmental impact and production costs.
