Genetics of Grapevine Breeding
1997The European grapevine, Vitis vinifera, is a woody perennial, climbing by tendrils. It is easy to propagate by cutting segments of mature canes and was domesticated 7 to 8 thousand years ago somewhere in Middle Asia. From this ancestral centre, viticulture spread around the Mediterranean Basin and later, with emigrants, throughout the world.
