Grapevine Leafroll Disease and Associated Viruses: A Unique Pathosystem

Annual Review of Phytopathology, 2015
Grapevine leafroll is the most complex and intriguing viral disease of grapevine (Vitis spp.). Several monopartite closteroviruses (family Closteroviridae) from grapevines have been molecularly characterized, yet their role in disease etiology is not completely resolved. Hence, these viruses are currently designated under the umbrella term of Grapevine

Management of Grapevine Leafroll Disease and Associated Vectors in Vineyards

2017
In this chapter, we discuss methods to manage the spread of grapevine leafroll disease in the vineyard itself. We briefly describe the viruses and vectors involved and present epidemiological properties of the virus-vector relationship that are relevant to the management of the disease.

The New Zealand perspective of an ecosystem biology response to grapevine leafroll disease

Advances in Virus Research
Grapevine leafroll-associated virus 3 (GLRaV-3) is a major pathogen of grapevines worldwide resulting in grapevine leafroll disease (GLD), reduced fruit yield, berry quality and vineyard profitability. Being graft transmissible, GLRaV-3 is also transmitted between grapevines by multiple hemipteran insects (mealybugs and soft scale insects).

Spatio-Temporal Spread of Grapevine Leafroll Disease in Washington State Vineyards

Plant Disease, 2023
The spread of grapevine leafroll disease (GLD) to vineyards planted with certified planting stock is of significant concern to grape growers. In this study, the spatial and temporal spread of GLD was examined in three vineyard blocks planted with virus-tested wine grape (Vitis vinifera) cultivars adjacent to vineyard blocks heavily infected with GLD ...

Serological and molecular evidence for the complexity of the leafroll disease of grapevine

Plant Pathology, 1989
Samples of leafroll‐infected grapevines from various countries, as well as local sources, were tested by ELISA with antisera against two closteroviruses (GVA and NY‐1) and a potyvirus (GPV) thought to be associated with leafroll. Many of the samples reacted positively with more than one antiserum, and often with all three.

Characterization of Closterovirus‐like Particles Associated with Grapevine Leafroll Disease

Journal of Phytopathology, 1990
Abstract A purification procedure (Zeeet al. 1987) for closterovirus‐like particles associated with grapevine leafroll disease was improved after various sources of plant tissues, extraction buffers, pH values, and centrifugation techniques had been examined. An antiserum against the CA‐4 isolate was produced and used in ELISA. The virus‐like particles

An Agent-Based Model of Plant Disease Diffusion and Control: Grapevine Leafroll Disease

2012
The grapevine leafroll disease (GLRD) threatens grape harvests in the United States and the world. This viral disease reduces yield, delays fruit ripening, and affects wine quality. The disease ecology is still under study and the spatial-dynamics of the spread process remains poorly understood. Moreover, little is known about cost-efficient strategies

Occurrence of grapevine virus A (GVA) and other closteroviruses in Tunisian grapevines affected by leafroll disease

2015

A Plant‐Level, Spatial, Bioeconomic Model of Plant Disease Diffusion and Control: Grapevine Leafroll Disease

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2014
AbstractGrapevine leafroll disease threatens the economic sustainability of the grape and wine industry in the United States and around the world. This viral disease reduces yield, delays fruit ripening, and affects wine quality. Although there is new information on the disease spatial‐dynamic diffusion, little is known about profit‐maximizing control ...
