Nocturnal Singing in Grassland Birds

The Wilson Bulletin, 2000
Abstract We conducted unlimited radius point counts from March–July 1999 at sunrise, dusk, and night to document the relative frequency of nocturnal singing by grassland birds at Prairie Ridge State Natural Area, Jasper County, Illinois. Most grassland species were recorded singing at all times of day, but least commonly at night.

Sociality of grassland birds during winter

Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, 1983
Sociality of granivorous passerine birds occupying open grassland habitats of the southcentral United States was evaluated during winter in relation to habitat cover, seed density and bird density. Habitat height and habitat density, measures of exposure to potential predation, are associated with the major distinction of social pattern between the two

Grassland Bird Communtiy Response To Large Wildfires

The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, 2012
Abstract We studied breeding season communities of grassland birds on short-grass and mixed-grass prairie sites during the second and third breeding seasons following two large wildfires in March 2006 in the Texas panhandle, USA. There was an apparent temporary shift in avian community composition following the fires due to species-specific shifts ...

Grasslands as a bird habitat

2009
Grassland bird 'communities' are composed of a mixture of species that require a certain openness. Bird species can be assigned to certain habitat types based on their selection of breeding or feeding habitat at a certain point of their annual life cycle, despite of the relatively wide range of habitats they may use. Steppic grasslands hold 43 priority

Grassland bird communities on conservation and marginal grasslands in an agricultural landscape

Agriculture, Ecosystems & Environment, 2014
Six years of point count data in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, USA, were used to investigate how the community structure of grassland birds and the densities of four focal species (common yellowthroat, dickcissel, grasshopper sparrow and sedge wren) varied on conservation lands with differing management strategies (i.e., warm- versus cool-season ...

Pattern and Process in Grassland Bird Communities

Ecological Monographs, 1973
Variations in abundance and distribution of bird species and avifaunal and community organization at regional, local, and within—plot levels were studied during 1969 and 1970 at a shortgrass prairie in Colorado and during 1970 at six additional International Biological Program (IBP) grassland sites.

Remaining large grasslands may not be sufficient to prevent grassland bird declines

Biological Conservation, 2008
Abstract Grassland birds are in steep decline throughout many regions of the world. In North America, even some common species have declined by >50% over the last few decades. Declines in grassland bird populations have generally been attributed to widespread agricultural conversion of grasslands; more than 80% of North American grasslands have been ...
