Pushing Radiative Cooling Technology to Real Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Radiative cooling controls surface optical properties for solar and thermal radiation, offering solutions for global warming and energy savings. Despite significant advances, key challenges remain: optimizing optical efficiency, maintaining aesthetics, preventing overcooling, enhancing durability, and enabling scalable production.

The abutting grating illusion

open access: yesVision Research, 1996
Two line gratings abutting each other with a phase shift of half a cycle elicit the perception of an illusory line running orthogonally between the two sets of grating lines. We found that rating strength increases with increasing number of lines, line length, and phase angle.

A Bio‐Inspired Perspective on Materials Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective discusses natural materials as inspiration for sustainable engineering designs and the processing of materials. First, circularity, longevity, parsimony, and activity are presented as essential material paradigms. The perspective then uses many examples of natural and technical materials to introduce principles such as oligo ...

Colored Radiative Cooling: from Photonic Approaches to Fluorescent Colors and Beyond

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Colored radiative cooling (CRC) has become a prevailing technology for achieving colorful appearance and simultaneously enhancing the effective solar reflectance of cooling coatings. This review presents recent advancements in CRC and its profound impact on energy savings in real‐world applications.

Terahertz optically tunable dielectric metamaterials without microfabrication

open access: yes, 2012
We theoretically investigate the terahertz dielectric response of a semiconductor slab hosting an infrared photoinduced grating. The periodic structure is due to the charge carries photo-excited by the interference of two tilted infrared plane waves so ...

Silicon photonic grating-assisted, contra-directional couplers.

open access: yesOptics Express, 2013
We demonstrate, in both theory and experiment, 4-port, electrically tunable photonic filters using silicon contra-directional couplers (contra-DCs) with uniform and phase-shifted waveguide Bragg gratings.

Epitaxial Ferroelectric Hexagonal Boron Nitride Grown on Graphene

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The epitaxial growth of hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) multilayer films on graphene, synthesized on a miscut SiC (0001) substrate, is demonstrated using nitrogen plasma‐assisted molecular‐beam epitaxy. Robust ferroelectricity with switchable out‐of‐plane polarization via interlayer sliding is supported by theoretical and experimental insights ...

Laser Interferometry for Broad Area SPR-Grating Couplers in Chemical Applications

open access: yesProceedings, 2017
In this work, the fabrication of a SPR (Surface Plasmon Resonance)-grating coupler using Laser Interference Lithography (LIL) has been investigated, giving rise to large area diffraction gratings on a 100 nm-thick gold film. The period of the diffraction

Defect grating modes as superimposed grating states [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
For a symmetric grating structure with a defect, we show that a fully transmitted defect mode in the band gap can be obtained as a superposition of two steady states: an amplified and an attenuated defect state.
