NGC 362: another globular cluster with a split red giant branch

open access: yes, 2013
We obtained FLAMES GIRAFFE+UVES spectra for both first and second-generation red giant branch (RGB) stars in the globular cluster (GC) NGC 362 and used them to derive abundances of 21 atomic species for a sample of 92 stars. The surveyed elements include

Label-Free Metabolic Classification of Single Cells in Droplets Using the Phasor Approach to Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Characterization of single cell metabolism is imperative for understanding subcellular functional and biochemical changes associated with healthy tissue development and the progression of numerous diseases.

Reduced fertilization regimes could boost biocontrol service without reducing crop yield

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Fertilization level influences pest control effectiveness in tomato crops. High fertilization increases plant growth and aphid density but reduces the performance of the parasitoid Aphidius ervi. In contrast, the predator Adalia bipunctata maintains consistent aphid suppression regardless of fertilization regime.

Interaction of apolipoprotein A-I in three different conformations with palmitoyl oleoyl phosphatidylcholine vesicles

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2002
Interactions of apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) with cell membranes appear to be important in the initial steps of reverse cholesterol transport. The objective of this work was to examine the effect of three distinct conformations of apoA-I (lipid-free and ...

The value of regeneration for insect fauna associated with leaf litter in the Brazilian savanna: A comparative study of biomass and trophic structure

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the ecological value of natural regeneration in the Brazilian Cerrado by analysing the biomass, richness and trophic structure of leaf litter insects across pasture (P), regenerating (R) and native (N) areas. We found that R areas supported insect communities more similar to N habitats than to Ps, with higher richness, greater ...

The Horizontal Branch of NGC 1851: Constraints from its RR Lyrae Variables

open access: yes, 2012
We use the pulsational properties of the RR Lyrae variables in the globular cluster NGC 1851 to obtain detailed constraints of the various sub-stellar populations present along its horizontal branch.

The Age of the Inner Halo Globular Cluster NGC 6652 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
HST (V,I) photometry has been obtained for the inner halo globular cluster NGC 6652. The photometry reaches approximately 4 mag below the turn-off and includes a well populated horizontal branch.

Argumentation strategies in party competition

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Political Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Political parties' rhetorical strategies play a crucial role in shaping public opinion and electoral outcomes. To gain insight into what kind of arguments parties present to the public, and under what conditions, we develop a model of argumentation where parties compete to persuade voters before engaging in platform competition.

Why did Putin invade Ukraine? A theory of degenerate autocracy

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Political Science, EarlyView.
Abstract Many dictatorships end up with a series of disastrous decisions such as Hitler's attack on the Soviet Union or Saddam Hussein's aggression against Kuwait. Even if a certain policy choice is not ultimately fatal for the regime, such as Mao's Big Leap Forward or the Pol Pot's collectivization drive, they typically involve both a miscalculation ...

Coworking spaces and workplaces of the future: Critical perspectives on community, context and change

open access: yesEuropean Management Review, EarlyView.
Abstract The last decade has witnessed increased demand by employers and workers for greater flexibility, especially regarding remote and hybrid work. There has therefore been a substantial increase in academic interest in coworking, including within business and management studies. We conduct a systematic literature review of research on coworking and
