Understanding gravity gradients
SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2005, 2005Summary: Gravity gradients often produce a complex pattern of anomalies over their sources. To understand this pattern and to aid in the interpretation of measured gravity gradient data, gravity gradient components of the full gradient tensor are computed starting with the basic gravitational potential, followed by computing the first derivatives and ...

Gravity-induced gradients in critical mixtures
Optics Communications, 1976Abstract We report experimental measurement of gravitationally induced concentration gradients in a binary critical mixture. Measurements are performed for the first time with a non-perturbative optical technique upon entire size of the cell. In this way, both the shape of the gradients as a function of the height and their time evolution can be ...

Abstract The formula for computing the radial gradient of the gravity is derived from the gravity gradients. Since GOCE satellite attitude has such property that one axis in the gradiometer almost has the same direction as the radial one of the earth, the formula can be used to compute the radial derivative of second order of the disturbing potential.

Joint interpretation of gravity and gravity gradient profiles
SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 2001, 2001Measurement of the vertical gravity gradient (gz,z) and the vertical gravity field (gz) along a single profile promises to provide more geological information than is provided by either data set alone. This additional information can be recovered through joint inversion.

The vertical gradients of gravity have great significance both in geodesy and in geophysics. In geodesy, in the free air reduction of gravity, the regional gradients should be used, rather than the customary normal gradients. The gravity anomalies, which include the free air reduction, are used in practice to determine geoid undulations, deflections of

Understanding gravity gradients—a tutorial
The Leading Edge, 2006The use of gravity gradient (GG) data in exploration is becoming more common. However, interpretation of gravity gradient data is not as easy as the familiar vertical gravity data. For a given source, regardless of its simplicity, gravity gradients often produce a complex pattern of anomalies (single, doublet, triplet, or quadruplet) as compared to the

Processing gravity gradient data
Geophysics, 2011Abstract As the demand for high-resolution gravity gradient data increases and surveys are undertaken over larger areas, new challenges for data processing have emerged. In the case of full-tensor gradiometry, the processor is faced with multiple derivative measurements of the gravity field with useful signal content down to a few ...

The average horizontal gravity gradient
Geophysics, 1962Abstract A brief theoretical discussion of the average horizontal gravity gradient is presented. Application of the average horizontal gravity gradient in exploration eliminates the disadvantage of all datum planes by unifying the techniques applied in regular gravimeter work and torsion-balance surveys, thereby resulting in better ...
