Evolutionary trade‐offs between beauvericin production and growth define divergent virulence strategies in Beauveria

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Two virulence strategies in Beauveria: a growth strategy characterized by rapid within‐host proliferation, and a toxin strategy involving antimicrobial activity and toxicity to insects Abstract BACKGROUND Pathogen virulence is often attributed to toxin production, yet toxins are metabolically costly and may not universally enhance fitness.

Sex‐specific compensatory growth in the larvae of the greater wax mothGalleria mellonella [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, 2017
AbstractDeficiency of food resources in ontogeny is known to prolong an organism's developmental time and affect body size in adulthood. Yet life‐history traits are plastic: an organism can increase its growth rate to compensate for a period of slow growth, a phenomenon known as ‘compensatory growth’.

Assessment of insecticide use practices in licensed pest control operators in North Carolina

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
A statewide survey of 105 licensed North Carolina pesticide operators found ants, mosquitoes, and aphids as top target pests, pyrethroids as the dominant insecticide class (68%), and limited resistance monitoring, establishing a baseline for future insecticide resistance management and outreach.

NOURISHING PREFERENCES OF THE GREATER WAX MOTH WORMS (Galleria mellonella L .) WHEN THE FEEDIN [PDF]

open access: yesMesopotamia Journal of Agriculture, 2008
Results of studying nourishment preference of the greater wax moth worms on wax combs that vary in their pollen, honey, and metabolic wastes of bees in addition to the appearance ( dark and white ) combs and elasticity of wax base showed that the ...

Robotics for Crop Pollination: Recent Advances and Future Direction

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT There is great interest in alternative pollination strategies for crop production in the face of climate change and perennial threats to the traditional pollination mechanisms. This review explores the potential of robotic pollination as a promising solution to these challenges affecting crop fertilization, agricultural sustainability, and ...

How do insects pollinate flowers? Behaviour during visitation determines high pollination efficiency by a generalist insect

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecosystem services provide essential benefits to human survival and well‐being. Animal behaviour is central to the delivery of many ecosystem services, yet we know little about how behaviour drives services' provision.

Effect of Co-Diet Supplementation on Biodegradation of Polyethylene by Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

open access: yesInsects
Pollution coming from plastic polymers, particularly polyethylene (PE), poses a serious threat to both humans and animals. The biodegradation of plastics facilitated by insects is a crucial and eco-friendly approach that can be employed to combat this ...

Insecticidal and repellent impacts of Lavender and Tea tree essential oils on different stages of Greater Wax Moth, Galleria mellonella L. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). [PDF]

open access: yesCatrina: The International Journal of Environmental Sciences
The greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) poses a significant challenge to apiculture by damaging stored wax combs, affecting honeybee product quality, and potentially transmitting diseases.

Innate behaviours shape generalist herbivore host choice and feeding patterns independent of plant defences

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plant–herbivore interactions are typically examined through plant defence and herbivore performance, yet individual herbivore behavioural mechanisms underlying these interactions are rarely considered alongside plant traits.
