CITES Appendix III: An underused tool for international wildlife trade regulation

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Appendix III of CITES allows Parties to unilaterally extend domestic species protections to international trade, yet it remains vastly underused, covering just 1.3% of listed species. Drawing on the complete historical record since 1975, we show that Appendix III is most effective for endemic species and functions as a highly successful staging ...

Pairing ecological modeling and human dimensions in structured decision making: Road management for a declining species

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Structured decision making (SDM) is an effective framework for addressing complex natural resource problems, but few applications have incorporated substantive social science—particularly, human dimensions methods—to more fully characterize socioecological components of these problems. We describe an SDM process that paired ecological models with human

The pantropical biodiversity footprint of oil palm

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Although oil palm expansion is a main driver of tropical deforestation, this is the first study that integrates species‐specific habitats to assess oil palm's biodiversity footprint globally. We find that 4.5% of forest‐dependent species lost more than 1% of their potential habitats to oil palm; São Tomé and Sri Lanka have the highest per‐hectare ...

Length‐Based Spawning Potential Ratio Assessment of Key Species From a Remote Recreational Fishery at Diego Garcia, Indian Ocean

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Recreational fisheries in remote regions often operate under limited regulation and data availability, presenting challenges for sustainable management. Diego Garcia, located within the Chagos Marine Protected Area, hosts a unique recreational reef fishery embedded within a highly protected environment. We assessed the stock status of five key

Skeletons of swiftly swimming sharks: Three‐dimensional analysis of lamniform vertebral morphology and mineral architecture

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
We examined morphology, 3D arrangement, and mineral amount in cartilaginous vertebrae from four lamniform shark families (Alopiidae, Carchariidae, Cetorhinidae, and Lamnidae). We identified family‐specific mineralization trends, and regional patterning of structures along the column.
