Visual Accommodation in the Green Turtle

Science, 1967
Ophthalmological and anatomical studies indicate that the Atlantic green turtle is extremely myopic when its eyes are out of water. This finding bears on current theories of visual orientation and navigation in these animals.

Are green turtles globally endangered?

Global Ecology and Biogeography, 2006
ABSTRACTAim  To examine the exploitation, recovery and current status of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting at Ascension Island.Location  Ascension Island (UK) (7°57′ S, 14°22′ W), South Atlantic Ocean. Methods  We analysed records of the harvest of green turtles nesting at Ascension Island between 1822 and 1935, illustrating the decline in numbers ...

Green turtles nest survival: Quantifying the hidden predation

Marine Environmental Research, 2022
Trindade Island is the largest nesting site for green turtles Chelonia mydas in Brazil and one of the most important in the Atlantic ocean. The terrestrial crab Johngarthia lagostoma forages almost everywhere on the island, including the green turtle nesting beaches. Nothing is known about crab predation on sea turtle eggs at the time of nesting.

Exploring plastic-induced satiety in foraging green turtles

Environmental Pollution, 2020
In the last decade many studies have described the ingestion of plastic in marine animals. While most studies were dedicated to understanding the pre-ingestion processes involving decision-making foraging choices based on visual and olfactory cues of animals, our knowledge in the post-ingestion consequences remains limited.

Time-restricted orientation of green turtles

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2016
Sea turtles have an exceptional ability to travel accurately between known habitats as well as from unknown areas back to familiar habitats. Previous studies indicate that their ability to migrate long distances depends upon geomagnetic cues, but that they may rely on other undetermined cues once they are close to their destination.

Social facilitation in green turtle siblings

Animal Behaviour, 1961
Abstract 1. 1. Tests made at the green turtle nesting ground at Tortuguero, Costa Rica, show that turtles hatching singly have reduced prospects of emerging from the nest, and even less chance of reaching the sea. 2. 2. Observations through glass nest sides, and of young going from the nest to the sea, show that group facilitation, probably ...
