The Plight of the Grey Seal in the Baltic [PDF]

open access: yesOryx, 1965
The grey seals in the Baltic, like those on the Fame Islands in Britain, are accused by the fishermen of serious damage to fisheries and nets. But unlike the British seals the Baltic ones are not only entirely unprotected, but bounties are paid for their destruction in Sweden and Finland, and their numbers are decreasing.

Images as proximity sensors : the incidence of conspecific foraging in Antarctic fur seals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Although there have been recent advances in the development of animal-attached ‘proximity’ tags to remotely record the interactions of multiple individuals, the efficacy of these devices depends on the instrumentation of sufficient animals ...

Hydrophobic MFI‐Type Zeolites via Alkali‐Cation‐Induced Defect Healing: Implications for Adsorbent and Catalyst Design

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Sub‐stoichiometric amounts of Na+ or K+ enhance defect healing during Silicalite‐1 (MFI) and TS‐1 calcination by promoting Si–O–Si annealing and healing framework vacancies. The resulting defect‐free zeolites are more hydrophobic and show improved butanol/water separation and improved activity and selectivity in the epoxidation of 1‐hexene, offering a ...

Gold‐Stabilized Copper Enables Anodic Hydrogen Evolution for Ultralow‐Voltage CO‐to‐Ethylene Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Gold‐stabilized copper suppresses hydroxide‐driven deactivation during anodic hydrogen evolution from furfural. Pairing this low‐potential anode with CO‐to‐ethylene electroreduction enables sub‐1 V operation at 400 mA cm−2, high single‐pass CO conversion, and co‐production of ethylene, furoic acid, and a separate hydrogen stream.

Patterns of abundance and maturity among three species of parasitic nematodes (Pseudoterranova decipiens, Contracaecum osculatum, Anisakis simplex) co-existing in Sable Island grey seals (Halichoerus grypus)

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2001
The abundance and maturity of three species of anisakine nematode (Pseudoterranova decipiens, Contracaecum osculatum, Anisakis simplex) that co-occurred in the stomachs of Sable Island grey seals were examined in relation to seal growth and seasonal ...

An approximate Bayesian method applied to estimating the trajectories of four British grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) populations from pup counts. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
1. For British grey seals, as with many pinniped species, population monitoring is implemented by aerial surveys of pups at breeding colonies. Scaling pup counts up to population estimates requires assumptions about population structure; this is ...

Spatial Control of Light‐Responsive Proteins and Optogenetics Within Hydrogels via Volumetric Bioprinting

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Spatiotemporal control over cell behavior within bioprinted constructs remains a key challenge in biofabrication. Volumetric bioprinting using multi‐wavelength light sources permits to activate light‐sensitive intracellular proteins as well as optogenetic gene and protein expression circuits in bioprinted cells, in addition to enabling fast printing of

Fine-scale determinants of female grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) pupping site and habitat preferences at North Rona, Scotland. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) is widespread in the Northern Hemisphere and throughout its range hauls out to breed terrestrially on a variety of substrates.

Confinement‐Induced Donnan Potential Enables Sealed Hydrovoltaic Power From Microliter Water

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An ultrathin MXene/cellulose nanofiber (CNF) nanochannel‐based hydrovoltaic generator produces sustained direct current (DC) from a single microliter droplet under sealed operation. Asymmetric nanochannel confinement establishes a persistent ion gradient and a confinement‐induced Donnan potential, harvesting the interfacial free energy released upon ...
