Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Converter Control Comparison Under Fault Conditions
2021 IEEE 12th Energy Conversion Congress & Exposition - Asia (ECCE-Asia), 2021Traditionally control of grid-connected converters is based on a grid-following structure, where a Phase Locked Loop is responsible for tracking the angle of the AC grid. However, such control structure leads to stability problems for weak and low inertia grids. Then, a grid-forming control structure is presented as a potential solution.

2020 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe (ISGT-Europe), 2020
With increasing shares of power electronics-based generation in power grids, grid-following converters may become unstable during faults, resulting from a loss of phase-locked loop (PLL) synchronism. Even when current grid code low voltage ride through (LVRT) requirements are met, PLLs may still become unstable under high shares of grid-following ...

Designing a Control Library for Grid-following and Grid-forming Power Converters
As a result of the energy transition, more and more power converters will be required in the future, which will lead to distributed energy generation across all voltage levels. Amongst others, these power converters take on tasks, such forming a grid or being capable of black starting.Lindner, Lars +5 more
