Sex‐specific brain reserve and progression from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer's disease dementia

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract INTRODUCTION Sex differences exist in Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatment response, but the role of sex in disease development and progression remains unclear. METHODS We performed multimodal analyses of AD biomarker–positive individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI; MCI ...

Age‐Related Changes in Density, Arborization, and NMDA Receptor Expression in Somatostatin Interneurons of the Mouse mPFC

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 534, Issue 10, October 2026.
Aging induces sex‐dependent remodeling of somatostatin interneurons in the mouse mPFC, with reduced cell density in males, increased dendritic arborization in females, and age‐related reorganization of GluN1 and GluN2B receptor puncta. These findings highlight structural and molecular plasticity of inhibitory circuits across aging.

Explore the Mechanism of Xiaoyaosan for Treatment of Bipolar Disorder Based on Network Pharmacology, Experimental Validation and Molecular Docking

open access: yesCNS Neuroscience &Therapeutics, Volume 32, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study evaluates Xiaoyaosan (XYS) for bipolar disorder (BD) using network pharmacology and experimental validation. Molecular docking reveals interactions between active XYS compounds and potential core targets. Animal experiments confirm XYS alleviates BD‐like behaviors in mice by suppressing core targets, elucidating its multi‐target mechanism ...

Contrasting African elephant movescapes across xeric and mesic savannas

open access: yesEcological Applications, Volume 36, Issue 7, October 2026.
Abstract Expanding human activities increasingly influence animal movement. Yet, conservation interventions often overlook intraspecific variation in how movement is structured across populations inhabiting distinct ecosystems. For wide‐ranging generalists such as African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana), understanding how responses to resource ...

Urbanisation Leaves a Genetic Signature but No Detectable Demographic Effects in a Small Mammal Population

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
Urbanisation can alter both genetic connectivity and demographic performance of wildlife populations, but these responses may occur on different temporal scales. Using multi‐year capture‐mark‐recapture data and microsatellite analyses of Eurasian red squirrels across an urbanisation gradient in Berlin, we found subtle genetic structuring without clear ...

Assessing the Potential Distribution of Eriocheir sinensis Under Climate Change: Regional Contrasts and Spatial Mismatches in Terrestrial and Nearshore Suitability

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
We developed global and regional species distribution models to assess current and future terrestrial freshwater and nearshore brackish‐water suitability for Eriocheir sinensis across its native range, Europe, and North America. Future projections indicated poleward redistribution, region‐specific reorganization of suitable environmental space, and ...

Asymmetric species turnover underpins the latitudinal diversity gradient in the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot of India

open access: yesEcography, Volume 2026, Issue 10, October 2026.
Latitudinal diversity gradients (LDGs), namely an increase in species richness from higher to lower latitudes, are one of ecology's best documented patterns, yet how the fundamental components of compositional mismatches (i.e. species gains and losses along a gradient) explain these patterns remains poorly understood.
