Leading hadronic contributions to the running of the electroweak coupling constants from lattice QCD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The quark-connected leading-order hadronic contributions to the running of the electromagnetic fine structure constant, $\alpha_{\rm QED}$, and the weak mixing angle, $\theta_W$, are determined by a four-flavour lattice QCD computation with twisted mass ...

Mechanisms of IgE‐mediated food allergy and the role of allergen‐specific B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Food allergy arises when allergen‐specific B cells preferentially produce immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies against harmless foods. This article explains the mechanisms driving IgE‐mediated reactions, highlights the central role of these B cells, and discusses how natural tolerance (NT) and oral immunotherapy (OIT) can reshape allergic immune responses.

Experimental and numerical study on scratching test [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper presents recent investigation of the material removal mechanism in single grit grinding test. Single grit scratches were generated experimentally by using CBN grit on En24T steel and compared with numerical simulation by using finite element ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Resilience and personality traits predict nurturing grit through student effort and interest in Ghanaian higher education

open access: yesDiscover Psychology
The relationship between grit and academic achievement is well documented. However, the determinants of students’ grit remain elusive, particularly in resource-constrained higher education systems.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

The Influence of Chronotype and Grit on Lifestyle and Physical Activity

open access: yesBuilding Healthy Academic Communities Journal, 2020
Background:  The chronotype of a person refers to an individual's natural sleep-wake cycle and whether that individual prefers morning or evening activities, and grit is an individual's perseverance and passion for long-term goals.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Grit (effortful persistence) can be measured with a short scale, shows little variation across socio-demographic subgroups, and is associated with career success and career engagement.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Grit (effortful persistence) has received considerable attention as a personality trait relevant for success and performance. However, critics have questioned grit's construct validity and criterion validity. Here we report on two studies that contribute
