Transient Ground Potential Rise Impact on Reliability of Sensor and IED
2020 5th Asia Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering (ACPEE), 2020In the smart substation, transient ground potential rise caused by lightning current is one of the main factors that affect the measurement accuracy and reliability of high voltage equipment sensor and IED (Intelligent Electronic Device). The paper established mathematical model for Impulse Generator and analyzes the variation trend of sensor and IED ...

Potential Rise Characteristics of a Grounding Grid Subjected to Lightning Currents
Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, 2016This paper presents the results of an investigation into the factors that affect the impulse response of a grounding grid under the passage of lightning currents. We carried out simulations of potential rise of a 10m×10m square grounding grid comprising 4 meshes buried in the soil of about 140Ω․m resistivity.

Observation of ground potential rise caused by artificially-triggered lightning
2010 Asia-Pacific International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, 2010Comparative analysis was made between the ground potential rise resulted from an artificially-triggered flash, the channel base current and close magnetic fields. The results indicated that the current peaks of the two strokes in artificially-triggered flash were 41.6 and 29.6 kA. The inferred currents, based on the close magnetic fields, were about 39.

Study of the Spread of Potential Rise Between Two Grounding Electrodes
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2015The groundings of the power distribution, signaling, and power systems of a railway system are individually performed to realize fail safe, and the groundings are often installed in close proximity. Thus, when a grounding electrode is invaded by a lightning current, its ground potential rises together with the potential of the adjacent grounding ...

Impact of Frequency-Dependent Soil on Transient Ground Potential Rise of Counterpoise Electrodes
2021 14th IEEE International Conference on Industry Applications (INDUSCON), 2021Tower-footing grounding impedance has a fundamental impact on the generated overvoltages in power system when a transmission tower is hit by lightning. In order to compute accurately the tower-footing grounding impedance, the frequency dependence of soil electrical parameters (resistivity ρ g and relative permittivity e r ) must be considered in the ...

Transient Ground Potential Rise in Gas-Insulated Substations - Problem Identification and Mitigation
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1982Transient ground potential rise, a phenomenon of 10-100 kV potentials with up to 10 ?s duration on the grounded enclosures of gas-insulated substations (GIS), may cause concern for personnel safety and problems for protection and control circuitry.

Transient Ground Potential Rise in Gas Insulated Substations - Assessment of Shock Hazard
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems, 1982Breakdowns and disconnect switch operations in gas insulated switchgear (GIS) generate short duration high potentials on the grounded GIS enclosures. These high potentials cause breakdowns between the GIS enclosures and other nearby grounded components, and have resulted in low voltage protection and control wiring failures and personnel shocks.

Probabilistic Assessment of Ground Potential Rise Using Finite Integration Technique
IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, 2018The behavior of grounding systems against waves with high-frequency content such as lightning or very fast transient overvoltages is completely different from the steady state. This paper presents a more flexible model of a grounding system with respect to frequency dependency of electrical parameters of soil and moisture variations using the finite ...

Ground potential rise calculation applied to a multiconductor network of a railway system
International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility - EMC EUROPE, 2012A calculation method illustrated by practical example to estimate the effect of a Ground Potential Rise (GPR) occurring in the vicinity of a multiconductor network of railway system is presented and discussed. This program takes into account the simultaneous effects of conductive and inductive coupling of a GPR on the electrical scheme of the ...
