IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1989
The nature of ground resistance is examined to explain the high impedance of faults directly to ground as contrasted to conventionally assumed low-impedance ground faults to neutral conductors or to towers with low footing resistance. High-impedance faults are shown to be inherently nonlinear due to the characteristics of soil.

Directional ground fault indicator for high-resistance grounded systems
IEEE Technical Conference Industrial and Commerical Power Systems, 2003Locating ground faults is a difficult and challenging problem for low-voltage power systems that are ungrounded or have high-impedance grounding. Recent work in pilot signals has renewed efforts in developing fault location methodologies. This paper presents a method for directional ground-fault indication that utilizes the fundamental frequency ...

Grounding for surge-protective devices ground resistance versus ground impedance
2006 IEEE Power Engineering Society General Meeting, 2006The aim of this paper is to address the often loosely used terms of impedance and resistance as related to grounding, and to educate the reader as to the significant difference between these two terms when contemplating the behavior of grounding systems impressed with transient impulse currents.

High Resistance Grounding—Avoiding Unnecessary Pitfalls
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2007The high resistance grounding (HRG) of 480-4160-V industrial power systems increases service continuity, enhances personnel safety, and reduces equipment damage when a ground fault occurs. HRG allows maintenance personnel to quickly and safely locate a ground fault while avoiding unscheduled downtime.
