Generating approximate ground states of strongly correlated quantum many-body systems through quantum imaginary time evolution

open access: yesJournal of Physics Communications
Most quantum algorithms designed to generate or probe properties of the ground state of a quantum many-body system require as input an initial state with a large overlap with the desired ground state.

A Molecular Matter-Wave Amplifier

open access: yes, 2004
We describe a matter-wave amplifier for vibrational ground state molecules, which uses a Feshbach resonance to first form quasi-bound molecules starting from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Jordan-Wigner approach to the frustrated spin one-half XXZ chain

open access: yes, 2006
The Jordan-Wigner transformation is applied to study the ground state properties and dimerization transition in the $J_1-J_2$ $XXZ$ chain. We consider different solutions of the mean-field approximation for the transformed Hamiltonian.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Extended Bose-Hubbard model with pair tunneling: spontaneous symmetry breaking, effective ground state and fragmentation

open access: yes, 2014
The extended Bose-Hubbard model for a double-well potential with pair tunneling is studied through both exact diagonalization and mean field theory (MFT). When pair tunneling is strong enough, the ground state wavefunction predicted by the MFT is complex

The ubiquitin ligase RNF115 is required for the clearance of damaged lysosomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Upon lysosomal rupture, an E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF115 translocates from the cytosol to the damaged lysosomal membrane. Moreover, RNF115 depletion impairs the clearance of damaged lysosomes, identifying it as a key regulator of lysosomal quality control.

Criticality without frustration for quantum spin-1 chains

open access: yes, 2012
Frustration-free (FF) spin chains have a property that their ground state minimizes all individual terms in the chain Hamiltonian. We ask how entangled the ground state of a FF quantum spin-s chain with nearest-neighbor interactions can be for small ...

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Construction and analysis of numerical algorithms for Erdelyi–Kober fractional integral equations

open access: yesScientific African
Erdelyi–Kober fractional integral (EKI) operator is a generalization of Riemann–Liouville integral (RLI) and has applications in diverse areas. However, unlike the RLI whose singular kernel is linear in the integration variable, the singular kernel of ...
