Two ground deformation modes, i.e., the arching mode and collapsing mode, may be caused by tunnel excavation. However, the development of the ground deformation corresponding to the two modes is unclear.

Spatial Variability of Grouting Layer of Shield Tunnel and Its Effect on Ground Settlement
This study aims to investigate the effect of the spatial variability of grouting-layer thickness on ground-surface settlement caused by shield tunneling and to provide a rational prediction method.

Numerical Analysis of Factors Influencing the Ground Surface Settlement above a Cavity
In this study, ground stability was evaluated through vertical displacement distribution and surface settlement results. In particular, a finite element analysis was conducted considering various factors (namely, cavity type and area, traffic load, pavement thickness, and elastic modulus) that affect a road above a cavity.

Deformation characteristics of ground with voids induced by shallow metro tunnelling
The existence of the ground voids makes the ground conditions around the tunnel more complex, which may increase the ground surface settlement and even induce collapse during shallow metro tunneling.

The effect of suction on ground surface settlement for a tunnel [PDF]
This paper addresses the physical modelling of a tunnel for saturated and unsaturated sand as well as tests in dry condition. A series of tests were conducted for a 50 mm diameter tunnel buried 25 mm into a poorly graded fine sand under different normal stresses: 0.78, 1.56, 2.34 and 3.31 kPa.

Tunnelling Induced ground settlement considering soil variability [PDF]
Ground settlement need to be predicted well so that necessary precautionary measures could be adopted. Ground deformation behavior due to tunnel construction in inhomogeneous soil has been studied in the past few decades by many researchers.

Research on Ground Settlement Regularity of Soft Rock Tunnel under Ultrasmall Distance
During the tunnel construction under the road, the shallower the tunnel depth, the greater the effect of the surface settlement. Thus, to analyze the ground settlement caused by tunnel construction under ultrasmall distance, the research is based on a ...
