Critical review of ground-borne vibration and impact assessment: principles, measurement and modelling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The aim of this paper is to review the principles of ground-borne vibration induced by road traffic. Several researchers have studied the impact of ground-borne vibration on people, structure, and equipment, and developed guidelines or standards in ...

Application of Raman and Photoluminescence Spectroscopy to MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Visible to near infrared luminescence of MgO is studied on MgO‐C bricks and nominally pure MgO powder, with focus on two similar sharp high‐intensity signals, at 699 and 871 nm, each surrounded by symmetrical sidebands. The nature of these sidebands is investigated by temperature‐dependent spectroscopic measurements, confirming phonon involvement by ...

Predicting the Distribution of Ground Vibration Acceleration Induced by Mining Activities Taking into Account the Directionality of Vibration Attenuation

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Entrepreneurs carrying out mining works under seismic hazard conditions are obliged to conduct studies in the field of engineering geophysics, including measuring, interpreting and evaluating the effects of rock mass tremors on ground vibration ...

Cooling a Micromechanical Beam by Coupling it to a Transmission Line

open access: yes, 2007
We study a method to cool down the vibration mode of a micro-mechanical beam using a capacitively-coupled superconducting transmission line. The Coulomb force between the transmission line and the beam is determined by the driving microwave on the ...

Air‐Pressure–Actuated Vibroacoustic Metamaterial With Tunable Bandgap: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the design, modeling, and characterization of air‐pressure–actuated programmable vibroacoustic metamaterials (PVAMM). The study focuses on leveraging air pressure to dynamically tune resonance frequencies for effective noise attenuation.

Field Measurement and Numerical Simulation of Train-Induced Vibration from a Metro Tunnel in Soft Deposits

open access: yesAdvances in Civil Engineering, 2021
Train-induced vibration is increasingly attracting people’s concern nowadays. In the coastal areas, many metro tunnels are built in the soft deposits, so the train-induced vibration effect is more serious.

Ground Vibration Measurements near Impact Pile Driving [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2016
Pile driving is a complex dynamic process where little insight has been garnered in terms of the energy transfer from the driver to the soil and surrounding structures. Ground motion measurements during driving of full scale steel H-piles with diesel hammers are presented.

On the Influence of Antioxidants and Recycled MgO–C Source Material on the Mechanical Properties of Carbon‐Bonded Magnesia Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The presented study focuses on the fracture behaviour of carbon‐bonded magnesia MgO–C refractories, where environmentally friendly fructose, collagen and lignin serve as temporary binding agents. The partial substitution of the source material with recycled MgO–C reduces the fracture resistance, which can be counteracted by the additional introduction ...

3D Vibration Estimation from Ground-Based Radar [PDF]

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2018
The paper proposes a method to estimate 2D/3D vibrations and displacements of mostly linear structures, like pipes, chimneys, towers, bridges from afar, based on synchronized Radars. The method takes advantage of Radar sensitivity to displacements to sense tiny deformations (up to tens of micron) with a time scale from milliseconds to hours.

Analysis of proposed criteria for human response to vibration [PDF]

open access: yes, 1975
The development of criteria for human vibration response is reviewed, including the evolution of the ISO standard 2631. The document is analyzed to show why its application to vehicle ride evaluation is strongly opposed.
