Redundancy and compensation in axon guidance: genetic analysis of the Drosophila Ptp10D/Ptp4E receptor tyrosine phosphatase subfamily [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Background: Drosophila has six receptor protein tyrosine phosphatases (RPTPs), five of which are expressed primarily in neurons. Mutations in all five affect axon guidance, either alone or in combination.

Mining Alzheimer's Interactomes, Macromolecular Complexes and Pathways for Drug Discovery

open access: yesPROTEOMICS, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that leads to dementia. Many cases are diagnosed annually and there is no currently available cure. Understanding the underlying disease biology of AD through the study of molecular networks, particularly by mapping clinical variants to tissue‐specific interactomes and ...

Confirmation of BIK and SAMHD1 as Prostate Cancer Susceptibility Genes

open access: yesThe Prostate, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background To independently assess data for recently reported genes—BIK, SAMHD1, FAM111A, and AOX1—in which rare variants have been associated with prostate cancer (PCa) risk and aggressiveness. Methods The study included 4448 PCa cases from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and 103,221 population‐based controls from the Genome Aggregation ...

Functional Relevance of CASP16 Nucleic Acid Predictions as Evaluated by Structure Providers

open access: yesProteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Accurate biomolecular structure prediction enables the prediction of mutational effects, the speculation of function based on predicted structural homology, the analysis of ligand binding modes, experimental model building, and many other applications.

The RNA‐Puzzles Assessments of RNA‐Only Targets in CASP16

open access: yesProteins: Structure, Function, and Bioinformatics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT RNA‐Puzzles was launched in 2011 as a collaborative effort dedicated to advancing and improving RNA 3D structure prediction. The automatic evaluation protocols for comparisons between prediction and experiment developed within RNA‐Puzzles are applied to the 2024 CASP16 competition.

Control of two sucking insect pests, a whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) and a thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), infesting hot peppers by spraying LDH‐formulated dsRNA

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
A vacuolar type ATPase subunit B (vATPase‐B) gene is identified and expressed in the midgut of Bemisia tabaci and Frankliniella occidentalis. The double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) specific to vATPase‐B was expressed in hot peppers by virus‐induced gene silencing (VIGS) and killed both whitefly and thrips.

The structural stabilization of the κ three-way junction by Mg(II) represents the first step in the folding of a group II intron [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Folding of group II introns is characterized by a first slow compaction of domain 1 (D1) followed by the rapid docking of other domains to this scaffold. D1 compaction initiates in a small subregion encompassing the κ and ζ elements.

An epigenomic threshold hypothesis for integrating dynamic environmental signals into functional models of developmental polyphenisms

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Interactions between developing embryos and a multitude of environmental factors (e.g. climate, nutrition, social cues, stress and anthropogenic contaminants) underlie adaptive and non‐adaptive developmental plasticity and carry broad implications across ecological ...

Differential gene expression in Chorthippus parallelus (Zetterstedt, 1821) (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) induced by Wolbachia infection

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Distinct lineages of the grasshopper Chorthippus parallelus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) form a well‐known hybrid zone (HZ) in the Pyrenees mountain range; the Iberian endemism C. p. erythropus (Cpe) and the subspecies C. p. parallelus, (Cpp) widely distributed throughout the rest of Europe. Both subspecies differ in diverse traits, including the strains of
