Group-velocity dispersion in photonic crystal fibers
Optics Letters, 1998The dispersion properties of photonic crystal fibers are calculated by expression of the modal field as a sum of localized orthogonal functions. Even simple designs of these fibers can yield zero dispersion at wavelengths shorter than 1.27 mum when the fibers are single mode, or a large normal dispersion that is suitable for dispersion compensation at ...

Two theorems for the group velocity in dispersive media
Physical Review A, 1993Two theorems on the group velocity are presented in this paper. First a simple proof is given that for any dispersive dielectric, there must be a frequency at which the group velocity of an electromagnetic pulse becomes abnormal, i.e., greater than the vacuum speed of light, infinite, or negative.

Tuning group-velocity dispersion by optical force
Optics Letters, 2013We propose an optomechanical approach for dispersion dynamic tuning and microengineering by taking advantage of the optical force in nano-optomechanical structures. Simulations of a suspended coupled silicon waveguide show that the zero-dispersion wavelength can be tuned by 40 nm by an optical pump power of 3 mW.

Group-velocity dispersion emulator using a time lens
Optics Letters, 2021We report a novel method to continuously track the temporal evolution of an arbitrary complex waveform as it propagates through a group-velocity dispersion medium by using a single-frequency-driven phase modulator. The proposed method exploits the fact that the frequency spectrum of a given (input) waveform, following a suitable sinusoidal temporal ...

Group velocity and dispersion in nonlinear-optical fibers
Optics Letters, 1991Many of the nonlinear effects being studied in optical fibers depend critically on the dispersion characteristics of the fiber. We generalize the scalar form of Brown's identity for group velocity in a linear waveguide to deal with arbitrary nonlinearity and use this generalization to show that the dispersion characteristics of a step-index fiber at ...

OPTICAL FIBERS WITH NEGATIVE GROUP-VELOCITY DISPERSION IN THE VISIBLE
Optics News, 1988In 1978, Hill et al.1 observed that subjecting optical fibers to illumination with green light from an Ar+ ion laser for approximately ten minutes could establish a grating along the fiber core. Reflectivities as high as 90% were achieved, with a bandwidth of approximately 200 MHz.

Group-velocity dispersion in a Bragg fiber
Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2008A comprehensive study of the group-velocity dispersion of the TE, TM, and hybrid modes in a Bragg fiber is presented by showing many numerical examples. The dispersion can be represented in a simple form as the sum of the material and the waveguide dispersions under the quarter-wave stack condition.

Femtosecond group-velocity dispersion in optics
Optical Society of America Annual Meeting, 1990Group velocity dispersion (GVD) is a well-known phenomenon that causes pulse broadening of femtosecond pulses propagating through dispersive materials. Femtosecond spectroscopy is becoming commonplace, and one must consider the effect of GVD in optical components such as mirrors, lenses, prisms, glass plates, glass cells, dielectric-coated mirrors ...

Group-velocity-dispersion-compensated propagation of short pulses in dispersive media
Optics Letters, 1996An optical scheme based on a single angularly dispersive element is proposed for canceling group-velocity dispersion for pulse propagation in dispersive media. It is demonstrated experimentally that a pulse duration of 100 fs is preserved throughout the travel of a 248-nm-pulse through a 75-mm-long fused-silica slab.
