The group velocity of an optical beam in free space is usually considered to be equal to the speed of light in vacuum. However, it has been recently realized that, by structuring the beam’s angular and temporal spectra, one can achieve well pronounced ...

Alumina coating for dispersion management in ultra-high Q microresonators
Silica optical microspheres often exhibit ultra-high quality factors, yet their group velocity dispersion, which is crucial for nonlinear optics applications, can only be coarsely tuned.

Effect of microchannel aspect ratio on residence time distributions and the axial dispersion coefficient [PDF]
The effect of microchannel aspect ratio (channel depth/channel width) on residence time distributions and the axial dispersion coefficient have been investigated for Newtonian and shear thinning non-Newtonian flow using computational fluid dynamics.

The characterisation of rock masses from laboratory and field studies of the velocity and attenuation of seismic waves [PDF]
This thesis addresses the concept of non-destructive rock mass characterisation using in-situ measurements of the velocity and attenuation of seismic waves. The thesis is divided in to two sections, the first of which considers a comprehensive laboratory

Group velocity of the probe light in semiconductor–metal molecules [PDF]
The group velocity of light is investigated in a hybrid nanostructure comprised of semiconductor quantum dot (SQD) and metal nanoparticle (MNP). In the presence of MNP, the hybrid absorption of the system can be eliminated and forms a broad transparency ...

Radial Velocity Dispersions of Star Groups in M67
AbstractHigh-precision measurements of radial velocities of the M67 cluster members are used to calculate the radial-velocity dispersions in the stellar groups found earlier in the cluster’s corona. The previously detected feature in one of the groups (Group 60) consisting of stars with almost identical space velocities was confirmed.

ChandraObservations of Low Velocity Dispersion Groups [PDF]
Deviations of galaxy groups from cluster scaling relations can be understood in terms of an excess of entropy in groups. The main effect of this excess is to reduce the density and thus luminosity of the intragroup gas. Given this, groups should also should show a steep relationship between X-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion.

Fully nonlinear inversion of fundamental mode surface waves for a global crustal model [PDF]
We use neural networks to find 1-dimensional marginal probability density functions (pdfs) of global crustal parameters. The information content of the full posterior and prior pdfs can quantify the extent to which a parameter is constrained by the data.
