Prostanoids during acute sarcocystiosis in growing pigs
Parasitology Research, 1989The stable metabolites of thromboxane A2, prostaglandin E2, and prostaglandin F2 alpha (TxB2, PgEM, and PgFM, respectively) were measured in the blood plasma of nine castrated male pigs, each inoculated with 2 x 10(5) sporocysts of Sarcocystis miescheriana (group A), and in that of nine non-infected controls (group B).

Studies on nitrogen retention in growing pigs
Archiv für Tierernaehrung, 1987Nitrogen retention (RN) was measured in 60 barrows of Danish Landrace and a total of 470 balance periods was carried out during the growth period from 20 to 85 kg live weight. In the first serie (Expt A) six different feed compounds of high biological value (HBV) were fed to 48 barrows, while in the second serie (Expt B) 12 barrows were measured on ...

Pharmacokinetics of Chronic Fluoride Ingestion in Growing Pigs
Journal of Dental Research, 1985The present study was undertaken to estimate bio-availability and biological half-life of fluoride and accumulation of fluoride in bone in the domestic pig. Eight animals receiving 2 mg F-/kg b.w. per day from age 8 to 14 months were compared with eight controls.

Transplant waiting lists could become a thing of the past if people could find a way to grow human organs inside other animals. Now mouse pancreases have been grown inside rats--a first step towards a ready supply of organs for transplant. When small parts of these organs were transplanted into mice with diabetes, it reversed their disease.

Adaptations to ambient temperature in growing pigs
Pflgers Archiv European Journal of Physiology, 19771. Pigs were weaned at 8--10 dyas of age and littermate pairs were raised in individual cages at ambient temperatures of 25 degrees C or 35 degrees C to 8 weeks of age. 2. Pigs reared at the higher temperature had longer extremities and less hair than controls even though body weights were similar. 3. On exposure to an ambient temperature of 45 degrees

Phosmet for the systemic control of pig mange in growing pigs
Veterinary Parasitology, 1985A study of the effect of Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis on the performance of growing pigs under commercial conditions is described. Mange was endemic on the farm. Phosmet treatment controlled mange in growing pigs and resulted in a 12% increase in average daily liveweight gain over untreated mange-infected controls.
