Growth of fungi on an inorganic medium

A species of Cephalosporium and another of Fusarium were grown for 5 years on a medium devoid of any known, complex, organic carbon source. The organisms were grown on a solid as well as in a liquid medium and the growth rates under various conditions, based on increase in spore number and dry weight, were recorded.

Minimal requirements of amino acids and vitamins were determined in chemically defined medium for five strains of Clostridium difficile. Cysteine, isoleucine, leucine, proline, tryptophan and valine were essential amino acids for growth of C. difficile. Arginine, glycine, histidine, methionine and threonine enhanced growth.

Growth of the L‐cell in galactose medium

AbstractThe failure of the L‐cell to grow in a medium containing galactose as the sole carbohydrate was found to be directly related to the initial pH of the medium. Excellent growth of L‐M cultures in Eagle's minimum essential medium containing galactose instead of glucose was obtained by adjusting the medium to pH 6.2–6.8.

Liquid medium for growth of Legionella pneumophila

The medium described is a simple yeast extract broth capable of growing large number of Legionella neumophila, the causative organism of Legionnaires disease. Filtration was chosen as a means of sterilization, since medium that was autoclaved did not support growth without the presence of Norite A.

Medium supplementation for growth of Campylobacter pyloridis

Experiments were conducted to define the growth requirements of Campylobacter pyloridis, a newly discovered organism associated with gastritis and peptic ulcers. Two clinical isolates were streaked onto various media, and growth was assessed semiquantitatively according to relative colony size and extent of growth through the streak.
