Does Rapid Guessing Prevent the Detection of the Effect of a Time Limit in Testing?

open access: yesMethodology, 2021
Rapid guessing is a test taking strategy recommended for increasing the probability of achieving a high score if a time limit prevents an examinee from responding to all items of a scale.

Guessing subject to distortion [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1998
Summary: We investigate the problem of guessing a random vector \(X\) within distortion level \(D\). Our aim is to characterize the best attainable performance in the sense of minimizing, in some probabilistic sense, the number of required guesses \(G(X)\) until the error falls below \(D\).

In Situ Change in Contact Angle of a Sessile Droplet on a Magnetoactive Elastomer

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Contact angles of persistent μL$\mu{\rm L}$‐sized water droplets on a mechanically soft MAE surface under time varying magnetic fields differ from those of newly deposited droplets. The ability to quickly alter the material properties allows one to observe intriguing droplet‐material interactions.

Efficient and Robust Standing Postures of Quadruped Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A calibrated static framework estimates load, optimizes torques, and adapts posture so quadruped robots stand efficiently and robustly under external payloads, achieving up to 50% lower torque demand. Inspired by the natural posture adjustments of animals under external loading, this article presents an optimization‐based framework for minimizing joint

Beyond Reasonable Doubt: An Abductive Dilemma in Criminal Law

open access: yesInformal Logic, 2008
In criminal cases at common law, juries are permitted to convict on wholly circumstantial evidence even in the face of a reasonable case for acquittal. This generates the highly counterintuitive—if not absurd—consequence that there being reason to think ...

Correction of Threshold Determination in Rapid-Guessing Behaviour Detection

open access: yesInformation, 2023
Assessment is one benchmark in measuring students’ abilities. However, assessment results cannot necessarily be trusted, because students sometimes cheat or even guess in answering the questions.

From Pores to Pavement: Advanced Modeling of Aluminosilicates for Scalable Carbon Capture in Concrete

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents a transferable modeling framework for carbon capture using aluminosilicates, integrating Universal Isotherm Modeling with experimental data. It reveals how ultramicropores, alumina content, and amine functionalization influence CO2 adsorption energetics.

Microscale Mapping of Fiber Strain and Damage in Composite Wrinkled Laminates Using Computed Tomography Assisted Wide‐Angle X‐Ray Scattering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study combines full‐field tomography with diffraction mapping to quantify radial (ε002$\varepsilon _{002}$) and axial (ε100$\varepsilon _{100}$) lattice strain in wrinkled carbon‐fiber specimens for the first time. Radial microstrain gradients (−14.5 µεMPa$\varepsilon \mathrm{MPa}$−1) are found to signal damage‐prone zones ahead of failure, which ...

Who Can Guess Better? The Relationship Between Word Class and Learners’ Style [PDF]

open access: yesTeaching English Language, 2007
The present study investigated the relationship between words’ part of speech (noun, verb, adjectives), guessing ability, and learners’ style of field independence/ dependence. One hundred thirty two subjects participated in the study.

Linguistic Sources in Guessing Word Meaning in Reading Arabic Text [PDF]

open access: yesGlobal Journal Al-Thaqafah, 2012
Guessing word meaning from context plays an important role in increasing the level of reading comprehension of second or foreign language learners. Despite various taxonomies for guessing word meanings, most of them generally fall into two categories ...
