Population and species neighbor identity impact trait–trait relationships and plant performance

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We evaluated how populations and species identity influence plant performance and trait outcomes in mixtures, and assessed trait variation among populations of two forb species native to the western United States (Dieteria canescens and Heterotheca villosa) following three interaction treatments (single‐population monoculture, two‐population mixture ...

Variational Formulation of Higher-order Guiding-center Vlasov-Maxwell Theory [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Extended guiding-center Vlasov-Maxwell equations are derived under the assumption of time-dependent and inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields that obey the standard guiding-center space-time-scale orderings. The guiding-center Vlasov-Maxwell equations are derived to second order, which contain dipole and quadrupole contributions to the guiding ...

Effects of chronic browsing on life‐history traits of an irruptive large herbivore population

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study aimed to determine the relationship between diet quality, body mass, and size (hind foot length), and female reproduction and sought to identify the mechanism by which high density under severe food limitations is maintained. Our results demonstrated that sika deer introduced to Nakanoshima Island have maintained high densities through high ...

Guiding of Rydberg atoms in a high-gradient magnetic guide [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We study the guiding of $^{87}$Rb 59D$_{5/2}$ Rydberg atoms in a linear, high-gradient, two-wire magnetic guide. Time delayed microwave ionization and ion detection are used to probe the Rydberg atom motion. We observe guiding of Rydberg atoms over a period of 5 ms following excitation.

Polarization Effects in Higher-order Guiding-center Lagrangian Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
The extended guiding-center Lagrangian equations of motion are derived by Lie-transform method under the assumption of time-dependent and inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields that satisfy the standard guiding-center orderings for space-time scales.

Guiding Neutral Atoms with a Wire [PDF]

open access: yesPhys.Rev.Lett. 82 (1999) 2014-2017, 1998
We demonstrate guiding of cold neutral atoms along a current carrying wire. Atoms either move in Kepler-like orbits around the wire or are guided in a potential tube on the side of the wire which is created by applying an additional homogeneous bias field. These atom guides are very versatile and promising for applications in atom optics.

Combining transient dynamics and logistic‐asymptotic growth to study the recovery of two seabird populations after rat eradication

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
This study examines the demographic dynamics of two seabird populations on Tromelin Island, 15 years after the eradication of brown rats. The results indicate that these populations are in good health and are expected to continue growing until breeding sites are saturated in about a century.

Martin Buber: guide for a psychology of suffering

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2023
Martin Buber was untrained in psychology, yet his teaching provides helpful guidance for a psychological science of suffering. His ideas deserve attention at three distinct levels.

Transport of polar molecules by an alternating gradient guide [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. A 80, 043407 (2009), 2009
An alternating gradient electric guide provides a way to transport a wide variety of polar molecules, including those in high-field seeking states. We investigate the motion of polar molecules in such a guide by measuring the transmission of CaF molecules in their high-field seeking ground state, with the guide operating at a variety of switching ...
