Guided modes and loss in Bragg fibres

open access: yesOptics Express, 2002
In this paper we investigate Bragg fibres and compare calculations on the exact fibre structures with calculations based on band diagrams and a simplified model involving multilayers. We show how the number of layers and the core size affect the wavelengths guided, the loss and the effective singlemodedness. An approximate relation between the real and

Rab14 regulates the transport of human papillomavirus to the trans‐Golgi network for infectious cell entry

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the small GTPase Rab14 is necessary for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and plays an essential role in the transport of virions to the trans‐Golgi network (TGN). HPV in the early endosome (EE), which harbors GTP‐bound Rab14, is transported to the TGN through the switch of Rab14 from its GTP‐bound to GDP‐bound form.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Mode Selection Model for Rail Crack Detection Based on Ultrasonic Guided Waves

open access: yesShock and Vibration, 2020
The cross-sectional geometry of a rail is complex, and numerous guided wave modes can be propagated in rails. In order to select a mode which is the most suitable for detecting a specific crack on a rail, a mathematical model of guided wave mode ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

Field Profile of Asymmetric Slab Waveguide Structure with LHM Layers [PDF]

open access: yesЖурнал нано- та електронної фізики, 2014
This paper presents asymmetric three-layer slab waveguide structure in which all layers are considered left-handed materials (LHMs) with negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability.

Photonic band structure in a one-dimensional distributed Bragg reflector pillar

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2020
This paper aims to calculate the photonic band structure in a distributed Bragg reflector pillar. The one-dimensional periodic photonic pillar consists of alternating layers of GaAs and air.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.
