Sex chromosome polymorphism in guppies
Chromosoma, 2014Sex chromosomes differ from autosomes by dissimilar gene content and, at a more advanced stage of their evolution, also in structure and size. This is driven by the divergence of the Y or W from their counterparts, X and Z, due to reduced recombination and the resulting degeneration as well as the accumulation of sex-specific and sexually antagonistic ...

Familiarity breeds contempt in guppies
Nature, 1999Male guppy fish increase their reproductive success by mating with unfamiliar females. When President Coolidge famously attributed the sexual ardour of roosters on a government farm to a steady stream of new hens1, he identified a strategy whereby males increase their reproductive success.

Gene flow in Trinidadian guppies
Journal of Fish Biology, 2000In 1957, guppies Poecilia reticulata from the Caroni drainage were introduced into habitat suitable for (but devoid of) guppies upstream of a waterfall in the Turure River of the Oropuche drainage. Previous allozyme studies, describing gene flow due to both sexes, showed that guppies downstream of the waterfall barrier represent an admixture of native ...

There's nothing that gets a magazine editor's heart racing as quickly as a trend. Even on a bimonthly, where breaking news is rarely an issue, finding a trend to hone in on is not just a perk of the job—it is the job.

The ‘birth’ of guppies Poecilia reticulata as a paradigm of evolutionary biology was in the Arima Valley of Trinidad, where Caryl Haskins first described the simple gradient of fish communities found in the ascent up the drainages of the Northern Range Mountains and its consequence for guppies.

Populations of aquatic organisms appear to be self-limiting (Rose, 1957, 1959, 1960). Breder and Coates (1932) have shown for the guppy, Lebistes reticulatus, that 5.5-liter aquaria would support 9 adult fish. This was their final number whether they started with one or 50.
