Background Pharyngitis is inflammation of the oropharynx primarily caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. S. pyogenes is a Gram‐positive, catalase‐negative, β‐hemolytic, bacitracin‐sensitive bacterium. Group A streptococci (GAS) pharyngitis causes the most outpatient visits and frequent antibiotic prescriptions among children.
