PPARα-targeted mitochondrial bioenergetics mediate repair of intestinal barriers at the host-microbe intersection during SIV infection. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Chronic gut inflammatory diseases are associated with disruption of intestinal epithelial barriers and impaired mucosal immunity. HIV-1 (HIV) causes depletion of mucosal CD4+ T cells early in infection and disruption of gut epithelium, resulting in ...

Gutted programs and children's guts [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Medical Association Journal, 2008
In polite parlance, it could be said educational administrators have now seen the error of their ways. After gutting physical education programs in the nation's schools a decade ago, they're now madly scrambling to revitalize previously robust physical education programs in the face of a ...

Beyond the gut bacterial microbiota: The gut virome [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Virology, 2016
The gastrointestinal tract is colonized with a highly different population of bacterial, viral, ad fungal species; viruses are reported to be dominant. The composition of gut virome is closely related to dietary habits and surrounding environment. Host and their intestinal microbes live in a dynamic equilibrium and viruses stimulate a low degree of ...

A new approach to gauge coupling unification and proton decay [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
An analytical formalism, including RG running at two loop order, is used to link the supersymmetric and GUT spectra in any GUT model in which the three gauge couplings unify. In each specific GUT model, one can then fully explore the interplay between the pattern of supersymmetry breaking and the prediction for the proton lifetime.

Targeted metabolomics reveals novel diagnostic biomarkers for colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed targeted metabolomic profiling to identify 302 distinct metabolites present in platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), revealing aberrant metabolic profiles amongst individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC). Compared to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19‐9 (CA199), our metabolite panel showed improved sensitivity ...

Polyfunctional CD8+CD226+RUNX2hi effector T cells are diminished in advanced stages of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CD226+CD8+ T cells express elevated levels of RUNX2, exhibit higher proliferation capacity, cytokines and cytolytic molecules expression, and migratory capacity. In contrast, CD226−CD8+ T cells display an exhausted phenotype associated with the increased expression of co‐inhibitory receptors and impaired effector functions.

Region-specific remodeling of the enteric nervous system and enteroendocrine cells in the colon of spinal cord injury patients

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) suffer from major bowel dysfunction, whose exact pathophysiology, particularly the involvement of the enteric nervous system or epithelial dysfunction is poorly understood.

Evolution of Mammals and Their Gut Microbes

open access: yesScience, 2008
Mammals are metagenomic in that they are composed of not only their own gene complements but also those of all of their associated microbes. To understand the coevolution of the mammals and their indigenous microbial communities, we conducted a network ...

Supersymmetry Searches in GUT Models with Non-Universal Scalar Masses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We study SO(10), SU(5) and flipped SU(5) GUT models with non-universal soft supersymmetry-breaking scalar masses, exploring how they are constrained by LHC supersymmetry searches and cold dark matter experiments, and how they can be probed and ...
