Aerenchyma is generally defined as a specialised plant tissue containing large intercellular air spaces. It is mostly renowned for its ability to increase gas conductance of those plant parts in which it occurs. Although aerenchyma is a typical feature of many wetland species worldwide, it can also be found in other plants among which many Bromeliaceae.
