Limited resources? Let the habitat priority planner help! [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this time of scarce resources, coastal resource managers must find ways to prioritize conservation, land use, and restoration efforts. The Habitat Priority Planner (HPP) is a free geospatial tool created by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric ...

Landscape metrics and indices : an overview of their use in landscape research [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The aim of this overview paper is to analyze the use of various landscape metrics and landscape indices for the characterization of landscape structure and various processes at both landscape and ecosystem level.

Linking Plant Metabolomics with Fungal Functional Dynamics Reveals a Noncanonical S‐R‐C Adaptive Trajectory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using field‐based holo‐omics, we demonstrate that developmental shifts in sorghum leaf metabolomes drive a noncanonical fungal succession from stress tolerators (S) through ruderals (R) to competitors (C). Antifungal metabolites in young leaves select for S strategists with expanded genomes, transient maltose pulses during flowering favor fast‐growing ...

Organic farms as refuges for small mammal biodiversity in agro ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Habitat fragmentation, the process by which relatively continuous habitats is broken into smaller pieces, occurs in natural systems but is to a high degree also human-induced through landscape use.

Effects of roads on wildlife in an intensively modified landscape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
This paper examines the ecological impacts arising from road networks and the potential ameliorating effects of roadside habitat in a highly modified landscape. A U.K.

Microbial Odorant Detection Guides Drosophila Parasitoids Seeking Hosts in Fermenting Fruits

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Yeast microbes in fermenting fruits attract both host flies and their parasitoid wasps. Female Leptopilina boulardi detect yeast‐emitted ethyl esters via two olfactory receptors, LbouOR167 and LbouOR136. A conserved residue, Leu159, is critical for binding these compounds, enabling female wasps to locate host‐rich habitats.

Sensing and Filtering Environmental Fluctuations: The Case of Biomolecular Condensates in Plants

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The diversity of plant condensates reflects constraints of sessile organisms to coordinate postembryonic development with environmental adaptation. This review examines how plants employ condensates to integrate temperature, light, redox, and nutrient signals.

Distribution and habitat use of deep-diving cetaceans in the central and north-eastern North Atlantic

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications
Major changes in the distribution of some cetaceans have been observed coincident with changing oceanography of the North Atlantic in the last 30 years.

Mangrove Habitat Use by Juvenile Reef Fish: Meta-Analysis Reveals that Tidal Regime Matters More than Biogeographic Region

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Identification of critical life-stage habitats is key to successful conservation efforts. Juveniles of some species show great flexibility in habitat use while other species rely heavily on a restricted number of juvenile habitats for protection and food.

An ecological framework for the development of a national MPA network [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Isolated marine protected areas (MPAs) may not be enough to sustain viable populations of marine species, particularly the many small coastal MPAs which resulted due to social, economic and political constraints.
