Habitat use and relative abundance of the Spotted Paca Cuniculus paca (Linnaeus, 1766) (Rodentia: Cuniculidae) and the Red-rumped Agouti Dasyprocta leporina (Linnaeus, 1758) (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae) in Guatopo National Park, Venezuela

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2015
The Spotted Paca Cuniculus paca and the Red-rumped Agouti Dasyprocta leporina are affected by habitat loss and hunting.  In Venezuela, their conservation status is unknown, even within protected areas.

Spatial Relation of Bumblebees (Hymenoptera-Apidae) with Host-Plant and their Conservation Issues: An Outlook from Urban Ecosystem of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Ecology and conservation status of bumblebee species remains poorly understood, especially in rapidly degrading urban ecosystems, which is important considering the role of bumblebees in the pollinations. We collected more than 200 bumblebee (Bombus

Optimal Grazing Exclusion Duration to Enhance Soil Carbon Sequestration in Degraded Grasslands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Across China, grazing exclusion reaches the national mean soil organic carbon recovery benchmark sooner in high‐MAP regions (> 500 mm), but recovery is much slower where MAP < 300 mm. Scaling this strategy to 70% of China's degraded grasslands would sequester about 1.52 Pg of soil carbon over 10 years—roughly 17% of annual global fossil‐fuel emissions.

Bioinspired Adaptive Leg‐Claw Enables Robust Perching and Grasping for UAVs

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Inspired by owl limb morphology and bat roosting behavior, this study presents a bioinspired adaptive leg‐claw mechanism that enables UAVs to perform robust and versatile perching and grasping. The design integrates a four‐link tibial structure, tension‐driven deformable feet, and active control, enabling stable perching on various branches and ...

EUNIS Habitat Classification: Expert system, characteristic species combinations and distribution maps of European habitats

open access: yesApplied Vegetation Science, 2020
Aim The EUNIS Habitat Classification is a widely used reference framework for European habitat types (habitats), but it lacks formal definitions of individual habitats that would enable their unequivocal identification.

Offsetting Nature? Habitat Banking and Biodiversity Offsets in the English Land Use Planning System [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Land use planning is a key arena for the spectacles of localism and marketisation being staged by our self-proclaimed greenest government ever. A new “presumption in favour of sustainable development” aims to encourage housebuilding and other development

Estimating offsets for avian displacement effects of anthropogenic impacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Biodiversity offsetting, or compensatory mitigation, is increasingly being used in temperate grassland ecosystems to compensate for unavoidable environmental damage from anthropogenic developments such as transportation infrastructure, urbanization, and ...

Programmable Semi‐Interpenetrating Living Materials With Robust Stability for Versatile Bioremediation and Biotherapeutics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A semi‐interpenetrating engineered living material (sIHSELM), fabricated via thermosensitive hydroxybutyl chitosan and covalent protein self‐assembly, demonstrates exceptional mechanical properties and environmental stability. Shielding bacteria from harsh conditions, sIHSELM exhibits remarkable efficacy in ulcerative colitis treatment and pollutants ...

Effects of Aphid Density and Plant Taxa on Predatory Ladybeetle Abundance at Field and Landscape Scales

open access: yesInsects, 2020
In agroecosystems, predatory ladybeetles play an important role in restraining aphid population growth and suppressing aphid populations. They can adapt to various habitats and make use of various aphid species associated with multiple host plants during

Engineering Microbial Particles for Next‐Generation Biomedical Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Microbe‐derived particles (MDPs), which include extracellular vesicles, outer membrane vesicles, inclusion bodies, polysaccharide particles, and virus‐like particles, represent a rapidly expanding category of bioinspired nanomaterials. With their natural origin, intrinsic biocompatibility, and highly programmable functionality, MDPs serve as a ...
