Operando X‐Ray Diffraction and Total Scattering Characterization of Battery Materials: Not Just a Pretty Picture

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
This review focuses on operando studies of battery materials by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and total X‐ray scattering (TXS). This work highlights potential pitfalls and identify best‐practices for operando studies and reviews some unusual experiments to illustrate how these methods can be applied beyond the evaluation of the early‐stage cycling mechanisms

Most habitat's and species' assessments in German Natura 2000 sites reflect unfavourable conservation states

open access: yesBasic and Applied Ecology
The Convention on Biological Diversity aims to protect 30 % of the Earth’s land and marine surface to promote biodiversity. In the European Union, conservation areas are mainly placed under protection through the Habitats Directive.

Threatened by Legislative Conservationism? The Case of the Critically Endangered Aeolian Lizard

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2017
Species-based conservation legislation needs to be based on sound scientific data and updated taxonomic knowledge. European Union environmental legislation is among the most advanced in the world, yet there is not a clear and regular mechanism to update ...

Mapping the functional dimension of vegetation series in the Mediterranean region using multitemporal MODIS data

open access: yesGIScience & Remote Sensing, 2020
Monitoring the structural and functional dimensions of natural vegetation is a critical issue to ensure effective management of biodiversity. While coarse-resolution satellite image time-series have been used extensively to monitor vegetation ...

Effects of Environmental and Health Information on Willingness to Pay for Local and Organic Foods in Taiwan

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Using a lab‐in‐the‐field experiment, we investigate how providing information about food miles and pesticide residue influences willingness to pay (WTP) for potatoes among 407 shoppers in Taiwan, split between a supermarket and a farmers market.

Biodiversity offsetting and restoration under the European Union Habitats Directive: balancing between no net loss and deathbed conservation?

open access: yesEcology and Society, 2016
Biodiversity offsets have emerged as one of the most prominent policy approaches to align economic development with nature protection across many jurisdictions, including the European Union.

EMG‐Driven Telemetry and Inference System for Fish: Pose Reconstruction and Flow Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This work introduces an electromyography (EMG)‐driven telemetry framework that reconstructs body pose and infers hydrodynamic conditions in freely swimming fish. A custom 16‐channel archival system records intramuscular EMG, enabling deep‐learning models to decode joint kinematics, classify flow regimes, and reveal channel‐efficient sensing strategies.

Artificial Intelligence in Autonomous Mobile Robot Navigation: From Classical Approaches to Intelligent Adaptation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping autonomous mobile robot navigation beyond classical pipelines. This review analyzes how AI techniques are integrated into core navigation tasks, including path planning and control, localization and mapping, perception, and context‐aware decision‐making. Learning‐based, probabilistic, and soft‐computing methods

A Biodiversity Hotspot for European Invertebrates of Community Importance (Natura 2000), Bârnova-Repedea Forest in Romania (ROSCI0135)

open access: yesConservation
ROSCI0135 Bârnova-Repedea Forest, covering 12,236.20 ha, is a relatively large Natura 2000 site from Romania, though not as large as other Natura 2000 sites. However, in terms of the number of invertebrate species of community importance, with 18 species
