Dust and Primary Biological Aerosol Particles (PBAP) Effects on Sea Breeze Systems Over Houston

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract Sea‐breeze‐induced convection plays a critical role in coastal weather but remains challenging to simulate due to complex aerosol–cloud interactions. Although mineral dust and primary biological aerosol particles (PBAPs) are known to act as cloud condensation nuclei and ice nucleating particles, their impacts on different convective cloud ...

Active Silica Diagenesis in the Deepest Hadal Trench Sediments

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Porewater dissolved silicic acid (DSi) concentrations and stable Si isotope compositions (δ30Si) together with biogenic silica (bSiO2) contents of sediments in five sediment cores collected from the southern Mariana Trench are presented.

Earthquake-enhanced dissolved carbon cycles in ultra-deep ocean sediments

open access: yesNature Communications, 2023
Hadal trenches are unique geological and ecological systems located along subduction zones. Earthquake-triggered turbidites act as efficient transport pathways of organic carbon (OC), yet remineralization and transformation of OC in these systems are not

Influence of Extremely High Pressure and Oxygen on Hydrocarbon-Enriched Microbial Communities in Sediments from the Challenger Deep, Mariana Trench

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2023
Recent studies reported that highly abundant alkane content exists in the ~11,000 m sediment of the Mariana Trench, and a few key alkane-degrading bacteria were identified in the Mariana Trench.

Rediscovering the Endangered Mediterranean Killifish Aphanius iberus: Environmental DNA Reveals Updated Distribution and Conservation Implications in Coastal Habitats

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 5, September‐October 2026.
Key strongholds and successful reintroductions of the endangered Spanish toothcarp, as well as the discovery of remnant populations at some historical sites, were identified through environmental DNA monitoring. These findings highlight eDNA as an effective, non‐invasive tool for advancing conservation efforts of threatened aquatic fauna in fragmented ...

Viruses in the sediments around the trenches harbor diverse survival mechanisms

open access: yesiMetaOmics, Volume 3, Issue 3, September 2026.
Deep‐sea trenches are the deepest and most isolated environments in the global ocean but the diversity and adaptation of the viral communities remain poorly characterized. In this study, 5563 viral operational taxonomic units (vOTUs) were identified from sediments of the Yap Trench and Western Caroline Basin.

Status of Polar Blue Carbon: Toward Recognition and Integration in Marine Policy

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 9, September 2026.
Carbon‐rich habitats in polar regions are globally important, as uptake of CO2 by marine systems is shifting toward the poles. Changing conditions are exposing these regions to anthropogenic exploitation. Timely policy intervention can protect these habitats to prevent further emissions and further integration of polar blue carbon in management ...

A metagenomics transect into the deepest point of the Baltic Sea reveals clear stratification of microbial functional capacities. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
The Baltic Sea is characterized by hyposaline surface waters, hypoxic and anoxic deep waters and sediments. These conditions, which in turn lead to a steep oxygen gradient, are particularly evident at Landsort Deep in the Baltic Proper.

The evolutionary origins of streptophyte multicellularity

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 5, Page 2365-2383, September 2026.
The phylogeny of streptophytes and the deep origin of branching filamentous growth. Summary Over their more than 1 billion years of evolutionary history, streptophytes have repeatedly transitioned between unicellular, simple multicellular and complex multicellular forms.

Using Ongoing Wildlife Surveillance Programs to Monitor Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria in the Environment

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 4, August 2026.
Screening of ESBL‐, pAmpC‐ and carbapenemase‐producing Escherichia coli among Swedish wildlife demonstrated a low occurrence of antibiotic resistance in wild animals. Only two ESBL/pAmpC‐producers were detected in red foxes originating from highly populated areas.
