New data on duck-billed dinosaurs (Ornithischia, Hadrosauridae) from the upper cretaceous of Tajikistan

Duck-billed dinosaur remains (Hadrosauridae) from the Yalovach Formation (Lower Santonian) of the Isfara 2 and Kansai localities (northern Tajikistan) are described. Most of them belong to a flat-headed hadrosaurid which is distinguished from all other representatives of the family by the absence on the frontals of a facet for the nasals.

Two distinct hadrosaurian lineages can be delineated, each showing changes from possible hypsilophodont ancestors. The Hadrosaurinae are typified by moderately vaulted palates, broad pterygoid flanges, large anterior maxillary processes, and non-folded premaxillae, with direct narial passages.

A Corythosaurus skull (UALVP 13) was collected in 1920 from what is now Dinosaur Provincial Park in southern Alberta, Canada and was designated the holotype of Corythosaurus excavatus, a new hadrosaur species by Gilmore (1923). In 1992, a previously uncovered, weathered, headless skeleton was found.
