Effect of the microbiome on pathogen susceptibility across four Drosophilidae species

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Four Drosophilidae species were used to investigate how variation in the host microbiome influences susceptibility to infection. Microbial composition and abundance differed among species and treatments. The effects of microbiome manipulation on host survival were both species‐ and pathogen‐specific.

Males are worse mothers: Comparing care patterns in a facultatively caring beetle

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Why should biparental care exist if offspring fare just as well when only one parent is present? In the facultatively dependent burying beetle, Nicrophorus vespilloides, manipulating environmental quality reveals that biparental care benefits offspring in form of lower personal immune requirement and parents in term of weight gain.

Evaluation of farnesol-induced changes in the haemocyte pattern of red cotton bug Dysdercus koenigii Fabricius (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae)

open access: yesJournal of Basic and Applied Zoology, 2022
Background Dysdercus koenigii Fabricius is a polyphagous agricultural pest of paramount importance. Farnesol is a plant-derived open-chain aliphatic sesquiterpenoid alcohol. It is an intermediate in the metabolic pathway of juvenile hormone biosynthesis.

The Effects of Noise on the Juvenile Life Stage of Crustaceans: Behavioral, Cellular, and Molecular Responses in Procambarus clarkii

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Juvenile Procambarus clarkii exposed to noise exhibited behavioral changes, shifts in enzymatic activity, and altered expression of stress and immune genes. The findings highlight the sensitivity of invertebrate juveniles to anthropogenic acoustic pollution.

The Importance of the Larval Parasitoid Actia interrupta (Diptera: Tachinidae) in Low Density Eastern Spruce Budworm Populations

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Actia interrupta is an important larval tachinid parasitoid during low‐density populations of the eastern spruce budworm. In the late 1980s during the outbreak collapse, Meteorus trachynotus was initially the most important species, but was replaced by A. interrupta. Host patch size and density had no impact on the parasitism rates by A.

Environmentally realistic concentrations of the antibiotic Trimethoprim affect haemocyte parameters but not antioxidant enzyme activities in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum

open access: yes, 2015
Several biomarkers were measured to evaluate the effects of Trimethoprim (TMP; 300, 600 and 900 ng/L) in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum after exposure for 1, 3 and 7 days. The actual TMP concentrations were also measured in the experimental tanks.

Haemato-biochemical variations in estuarine crabs from a lagoon ecosystem

open access: yesJournal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management, 2019
Haematological profiles are often applied as an index of physiological condition of various organisms and thus provide information about the health status of local populations.

The immune cellular effectors of terrestrial isopod Armadillidium vulgare: meeting with their invaders, Wolbachia. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
Most of crustacean immune responses are well described for the aquatic forms whereas almost nothing is known for the isopods that evolved a terrestrial lifestyle.

Microbiome‐mediated immunity: Limited support from the gazelle dung beetle

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
Digitonthophagus gazella rely on a maternally inherited microbiome passed across generations via a maternal faecal pellet called the pedestal. We experimentally manipulated the presence of the pedestal, providing it to some individuals while withholding it from others to determine how pedestal microbiota may affect beetle immune potential.
