Haemocytes and Their Population

1993
The circulatory system in insects is almost entirely of the open type wherein the haemolymph is confined to the body cavity or haemocoel. The dorsal vessel is a closed structure and considered to be the ‘primary circulatory pump’ (Jones, 1964) or the ‘dorsal pulsatile organ’ (Jones, 1977). The dorsal vessel, various accessory pulsatile organs and septa

In vitro studies of insect haemocytes

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1971
Abstract Several criteria for the objective assessment of death of milkweek bug haemocytes in culture were examined and the in vitro pattern of DNA synthesis by the haemocytes was determined. The simplest criterion of death was the presence of ‘chromatin droplets’.

Histochemical observations of the haemocytes ofLocusta migratoria

The Histochemical Journal, 1975
Five of the six categories of haemocytes of Locusta migratoria, that is, the plasmatocytes, spherule cells, granulocytes, coagulocytes and oenocytoids, contain conspicuous granules of mucosubstance in their cytoplasm. The mucosubstance has been characterized by using a series of histochemical tests, including Alcian Blue staining at different pH levels

The effects of ligaturing Galleria mellonella larvae on total haemocyte counts and on mitotic indices among haemocytes

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1969
Abstract Ligaturing the heads of Galleria mellonella larvae did not lead to a significant change in the heat-fixed total haemocyte counts within a period of at least 7 days. When the thoraces of larvae were ligatured, there was a rapid and striking decrease in unfixed and heat-fixed total haemocyte counts posterior to the ligature.

Drosophila melanogaster embryonic haemocytes: masters of multitasking

Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, 2007
Drosophila melanogaster haemocytes constitute the cellular arm of a robust innate immune system in flies. In the adult and larva, these cells operate as the first line of defence against invading microorganisms: they phagocytose pathogens and produce antimicrobial peptides.

Chemokinetic behaviour of insect haemocytes in vitro

Journal of Cell Science, 1986
ABSTRACT Time-lapse microphotography was used to film the locomotory behaviour of cockroach haemocytes in vitro, and the cell tracks were analysed for speed and persistence; the percentage mobilization and the diffusion rate of the population were calculated.

Phagocytic haemocytes in unfixed Galleria mellonella larvae

Journal of Insect Physiology, 1969
Abstract Phagocytosis by the haemocytes of unfixed last instar larvae of the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella (L)., was studied by injecting foreign materials into the haemocoele. Starch granules, sheep erythrocytes, latex particles, Chinese ink, Sarcina lutea , and Staphylococcus epidermidis were readily phagocytized by mitotically ...

Comparison of antigenicity among haemocytes of seven bivalve species by monoclonal antibodies against haemocytes of scallop (Chlamys farreri)

Fish and Shellfish Immunology, 2006
In this paper, haemocyte antigenicity of seven bivalve species (scallop (Chlamys farreri), bay scallop (Argoecten irradians), oyster (Crassostrea talienwhanensis), asiatic hard clam (Meretrix meretrix), monila clam (Ruditapes philipinarum), purplish washington clam (Saxidomus purpuratus) and horny ark (Scapharca subcrenta)) were analysed using ...

Antigenic cross-reactivity of crustacean haemocytes using monoclonal antibodies produced against haemocytes of shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei)

Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2004
Eight monoclonal antibodies produced against haemocytes of shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) were used to research the antigenic cross-reactivity of crustacean haemocytes. 2C3 cross-reacted with the haemocytes of all the experimental animals, while 1H8 and 2C11 did not cross-react with the experimental animals.
