SummaryNormal pregnancy is associated with profound alterations in the coagulation and fibrinolytic systems. While these physiological procoagulant changes are aimed to minimise intrapartum blood loss, they do increase the risk of thromboembolism during pregnancy and the post-partum period.

When the continuity of the vascular endothelium is disrupted, platelets and fibrin seal off the defect. Haemostatic processes are classified as primary (mainly involving platelets) and secondary (mainly related to fibrin formation or blood coagulation). When the blood clot is no longer required for haemostasis, the fibrinolytic system will dissolve it.

SummaryDevelopmental haemostasis is a concept, now universally accepted, introduced by Andrew et al. in the late 1980’s. However, coagulation analysers and reagents have changed significantly over the past 15 years. Coagulation testing is known to be sensitive to changes in individual reagents and analysers.

Haemostasis comprises the balanced orchestration of vascular integrity, circulating procoagulant and anticoagulant proteins, and cellular blood components (Moore and Rangarajan, 2009). Disturbances of one or more of these integrated compartments can lead to abnormal bleeding.

SummaryAutomatia, an ancient Greece goddess of luck who makes things happen by themselves and on her own will without human engagement, is present in our daily life in the medical laboratory. Automation has been introduced and perfected by clinical chemistry and since then expanded into other fields such as haematology, immunology, molecular biology ...

Cephalalgia, 2001
Migraine is a risk factor for cerebral infarction in young women. The nature of the connection between these diseases remains however essentially unknown. Abnormalities of haemostasis leading to an increased thrombotic risk would provide a logical link.

There has been much discussion about the role of platelets in the pathogenesis of migraine. A new in vitro technique using a custom built device called the Haemostatometer measures haemostasis, thrombolysis, and coagulation from non-anticoagulated, undiluted (native) blood.

Although reliable haemostasis testing is difficult to obtain in the newborn infant, information gained from such testing is important to the diagnosis of hereditary and acquired haemostatic disorders. Newborn infants are at risk for developing haemorrhage or thrombosis when provoked by various pathological stimuli.

Summary: Platelet function has been examined in humans during periods of enhanced fibrinolysis induced by streptokinase or occurring spontaneously. The degree of lytic activity has been assessed by thrombin times, fibrinogen levels and measurement of fibrin degradation pro-ducts in the serum.

Haemostasis part 2: medications that affect haemostasis
Dental Update, 2014Post-operative haemorrhage is a recognized complication in dental practice. This may be more prevalent in patients taking anti-thrombotic medications. It is important that the dentist understands the mechanism of action of these drugs and how they may affect management of dental patients.
