Hafnium Carbide Formation in Oxygen Deficient Hafnium Oxide Thin Films [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Physics Letters, 2016
On highly oxygen deficient thin films of hafnium oxide (hafnia, HfO2−x) contaminated with adsorbates of carbon oxides, the formation of hafnium carbide (HfCx) at the surface during vacuum annealing at temperatures as low as 600 °C is reported. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy the evolution of the HfCx surface layer related to a transformation ...

Synthesis and Characterization of Hafnium Carbide Fine Powders

open access: yesCeramics International, 2013
Abstract Hafnium carbide powder was synthesized by sol–gel polycondensation of hafnium chloride with citric acid. The starting materials were dissolved in water and mixed homogeneously on a hot plate until precursor gel was formed. Pyrolysis of this gel resulted in monoclinic hafnia which after subsequent heat treatment transformed into hafnium carbide.

Carbides and Nitrides of Zirconium and Hafnium [PDF]

open access: yesMaterials, 2019
Among transition metal carbides and nitrides, zirconium, and hafnium compounds are the most stable and have the highest melting temperatures. Here we review published data on phases and phase equilibria in Hf-Zr-C-N-O system, from experiment and ab initio computations with focus on rocksalt Zr and Hf carbides and nitrides, their solid solutions and ...

Oxidation of hafnium carbide and hafnium carbide with additions of tantalum and praseodymium

Oxidation of Metals, 1991
The oxidation behavior of HfC, HfC-25 wt. % TaC, and HfC-7 wt.% PrC2 has been studied between 1200–2200° C. Parabolic growth of the oxide layer has been observed for both HfC and HfC-TaC over the entire temperature range. A break in the temperature dependence of the oxidation kinetics occurs around 1600°C.

Oxygen Reduction on Hafnium/Hafnium Carbide Nanoparticles

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2015
Non-precious metal nanoparticles are attractive candidates for oxygen electrocatalytic reduction in electrochemical energy conversion devices, such as fuel cells and batteries. Here we report for the first time electrocatalytic activity of hafnium/hafnium carbide nanoparticles towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).

Enthalpies of formation of hafnium carbides

The Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, 1977
Abstract Enthalpies of combustion of hafnium oxycarbides HfCxOy (10 samples; 0.592 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.982; 0.006 ⩽ y ⩽ 0.149) have been determined by oxygen-bomb calorimetry. The dependence of enthalpies of formation of HfCxOy on x and y is described by the equation ΔH f o ( HfC x O y ) kcal th mol −1 = 15.4 − 81.8x
