Plastic deformation in hafnium carbide
Journal of the Less Common Metals, 1970Abstract Hafnium carbide can be plastically deformed by ball-milling and exhibits marked anisotropic behaviour when deformed. The 〈100〉 directions are relatively plastic compared with more brittle behaviour in the 〈110〉 directions, where cleavage occurs. The annealing curves suggest a recovery and recrystallisation process, as in metals.

Pressureless Sintering of Hafnium Carbide–Silicon Carbide Ceramics
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 2013HfC‐30 vol% SiC ceramics with a relative density of 99.7% was obtained by pressureless sintering at 2300°C for 0.5 h. The resultant ceramics showed fine microstructure with HfC grain size around 1 μm. The hardness (20.5 ± 0.2 GPa), bending strength (

Hafnium carbide nanoparticles for noninflammatory photothermal cancer therapy
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2023Photothermal therapy (PTT) effectively suppresses tumor growth with high selectivity. Nevertheless, PTT may cause an inflammatory response that leads to tumor recurrence and treatment resistance, which are the main disadvantages of PTT. Herein, monodisperse hafnium carbide nanoparticles (HfC NPs) were successfully prepared for noninflammatory PTT of ...

Electron emission from hafnium carbide
2010 Abstracts IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science, 2010Past research has studied single-crystal transition metal carbides operating in thermionic or field emission modes.1 In particular, hafnium carbide cathodes have properties making them attractive candidates for stable emission sources in moderate to good vacuum applications.

Coarsening of hafnium carbide particles in tungsten
Journal of Materials Science, 1995The coarsening behaviour of finely dispersed HfC particles in a W-HfC alloy was investigated by monitoring the growth rate of the particles. An activation energy of 480 kJ mol−1 was obtained for the process. Diffusion experiments of hafnium in tungsten were conducted at temperatures between 1773 and 2573 K using a secondary ion mass spectroscopy ...

Synthesis of hafnium carbide by mechanochemistry and irradiation
Russian Metallurgy (Metally), 2017The interaction in the Hf–C system during mechanical activation performed in a high-energy planetary ball mill and the irradiation-assisted fabrication of hafnium carbide from an Hf/C mechanocomposite are studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction (at a quantum energy of 33.7 keV) and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy.

Field emission from hafnium carbide
2007 IEEE 20th International Vacuum Nanoelectronics Conference, 2007An electron source for a high resolution SEM/TEM application should produce a high brightness, have a minimal energy distribution, and should be highly stable. In an application in which the resolution is limited by chromatic aberrations, one can improve the performance over a commonly used thermal field emission source, such as a ZrOW Schottky emitter,

Interdiffusion of hafnium carbide and titanium carbide during hot-pressing
International Journal of Refractory Metals and Hard Materials, 2012Abstract The interdiffusion of HfC and TiC during hot pressing was investigated using concentration profiles obtained via EDS in a SEM. The results were interpreted using the Boltzmann–Matano method and the integrals and derivatives were determined via numerical means.

Field Emission From Hafnium Carbide
Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology A: Vacuum, Surfaces and Films, 1992We report on experiments to determine the feasibility of using refractory transition metal carbides as stable field emission cathodes. Applications of such cathodes could include radiation immune microcircuitry, radio frequency (rf) vacuum microelectronic amplifiers, flat panel displays, e-beam lithography, and other uses where the need is for very ...

Vaporization of Tantalum Carbide‐Hafnium Carbide Solid Solutions
Journal of the American Ceramic Society, 1965The vaporization rates in vacuum of hot‐pressed HfC, TaC, and solid solutions of these carbides in the range 2225° to 2725°C were determined by a Langmuir‐type method. A composition near 80TaC.ZOHfC (mole %) exhibited the lowest vaporization rate of the compositions within this pseudobinary system.
