Identification of Hail and Size Estimation Using Weather Radar Spectral Reflectivity: Insights From the RELAMPAGO Field Campaign

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing
Dual-polarization Doppler weather radars operating at S-band and C-band are proven tools for hail detection. However, this research focuses on using C-band spectral polarimetric variables observations to refine the identification of hail signatures as ...

Characteristics of Hailstorms in Japan

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Meteorology, 1967
This paper is prepared for giving climatological information on hail occurrence in Japan. It is pointed out that there are two kinds of maxima in the distribution of the number of hail days in Japan. The maxima along the coast of the Sea of Japan are attributed to hailstorms mostly occurring in the cold season, (October-March), Whereas inland maxima ...

Climate change and hailstorm damage: Empirical evidence and implications for agriculture and insurance

open access: yes
There is much uncertainty about the effects of anthropogenic climate change on the frequency and severity of extreme weather events like hailstorms, and subsequent economic losses, while this is also relevant information for the design of climate policy.
