A Microscopic Mechanism for the Separation of Charge in Thunderstorms
Abstract We propose a plausible microscopic mechanism for charge transfer during rebounding collisions between ice crystals and graupel within thunderstorms. The key concept is that charge is transferred through the diffusional transport of H+ ions across the ice‐ice contact junction during collisions.

Hailstorm Damage Promotes Aspen Invasion Into Grassland
Global warming is widely thought to promote the dominance of grasslands over woody vegetation, and shift the location of ecotones. In contrast, forest vegetation along the northern edge of the North American Great Plains has migrated southward over the ...

Insights from hailstorm track analysis in European climate change simulations [PDF]
Hailstorms are among the most destructive weather events, posing significant threats to infrastructure, agriculture, and human life. This study applies hailstorm-tracking diagnostics to kilometer-scale, decade-long climate simulations over Europe using ...

Intercomparison of simulations using 4 WRF microphysical schemes with dual-polarization data for a German squall line [PDF]
Simulations of a squall line system which occurred on 12 August 2004 near Munich, Germany are performed using a fine grid version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with five different microphysical schemes.
