Progress in the treatment of patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL) has led to a significant change in the natural history of the disease. With current regimens, the majority of patients achieve a complete remission, and their survival curves are similar to those for appropriate age-matched individuals without the disease.

Cladribine in Hairy Cell Leukemia
Hematology/Oncology Clinics of North America, 2006Cladribine results in prolonged complete remissions in most patients wo have HCL. Several studies have indicated that patients who are in complete remission have survivals that are comparable to those of normal age-matched controls. HCL-related mortality is distinctly uncommon.

The diagnosis of HCL rests on the identification of HCs; a combination of characteristics — typical nuclear, membrane and cytoplasmic features — should be sought. The membrane hairs are the most obvious feature and are distinguished from those in other conditions by their frequency and fine nature.

Toxoplasmosis in hairy‐cell leukaemia
British Journal of Haematology, 1986Summary. Toxoplasma serology was performed in 28 patients with hairy‐cell leukaemia and was positive in eight patients (29%). In two patients (7%) reactivated toxoplasmosis was proven by either isolation of Toxoplasma gondii or by significant antibody titre rise with generation of specific IgM‐antibodies.
