Synthesis of halogenated diphenyl ethers and dibenzofurans - A discussion of specific isomers available

Abstract Synthetic routes for the preparation of halogenated diphenyl ethers and dibenzofurans are reviewed, and isomers reported in the literature are listed. In addition, the routes preferred for the synthesis of specific chlorinated isomers - especially from the point of view of an unambiguous structural assignment - are discussed in detail.

The structures of two halogenated diphenyl ethers from a marine sponge have been assigned from spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic evidence. The two compounds have been identified as 3,5-dibromo-4-chloro-2-(2,4-dibromophenoxy) phenol (1) and 3,5-dibromo-2-(2,4-dibromophenoxy)phenol (2).

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) were measured in eleven mollusk species collected from the Chinese Bohai Sea.
